    Citations in 2007 to 2003 (2007)

If I create a document in 2007 that includes citations, then save it in 2003 format, will someone using 2003 be able to not only open the document but the generate the citations reference page?

    Regards,

According to Open a Word 2007 document in an earlier version of Word, citations will be converted to static text, so the answer appears to be "no".

    Hans:

    I'm not understanding.

Without the compatibility pack, you can save a document in 2003 format within Word 2007. The attached is such I placed two cites in the document, and, of course, was able to generate a bibliography or citation list.

Using that document, are you, for instance, able to open it in 2003 and then generate the cite list?

Word 2003 and before don't have the bibiography feature, nor the CITATION field, so when you save a document in Word 97-2003 format, CITATION fields are converted to plain text.

Ah...so when I save it in 2003 format, I lose the references then? I keep the in-text keyword, but lose all the detail?

In Word 2003, I see this. There are no field codes in the document when I press Alt+F9.
