If a programmer is indispensable, fire his manager

"If a programmer is indispensable, fire his manager"
I thought this was a quote by either Robert Townsend ("Up The Organization") or Gerald Weinberg ("The Psychology of Computer Programming") , but I can't find it in my copies, and I can't find a reference to it on the web.
If anyone recalls the origin of this quote I'd appreciate a link.
Thanks.

According to Gerald M. Weinberg 's software development quotations, it was

If a programmer is indispensable, get rid of him as quickly as possible. -Gerald M. Weinberg, "The Psychology of Computer Programming: Silver Anniversary Edition " by Gerald M. Weinberg, ISBN: 0932633420, page: 100, Chapter 6

Slightly different!

Thanks, Hans. Same page in my (red) 1971 copy.
I'm still a little puzzled; maybe my memory is going; I'd swear I've heard a version "... fire the manager".
I need to get out more; or read more .....

Omg.

I didn't realise that people still remembered that book today.

I remember it ten years after it was written.

Does it have any relevance today?
