As the betas and RC's come out

I know it's never definite, and MS TechNet said there's no "path" as yet, but historically, are you able to install successive betas or RC's on top of one another, or do you have to start fresh each time?

Re: As the betas and RC's come out

Sorry if I missed something here, but are you asking how it was before:

"... but historically, are you able to install ..."

even if it shouldn't be the case with today’s betas?

From my point of view, if one truly is beta testing, then one doesn't do upgrades, or install on top of one another. (Only if it is to specifically test that function (in-place upgrade sort of) in some late beta, or RC.)

Since it's a beta and not a RTM, one should be prepared to reinstall at any time. And if it indeed were several betas coming, and one was a beta tester, then one would like to compare the progress and be completely sure that no traces of the old beta is left. Being able to keep all settings etc. in place is something for the end user of the final product.

If something went wrong with an upgrade from one beta to another one wouldn’t know if there is a new problem in the latter beta or if it was caused by doing an upgrade when one shouldn’t.

In this case, Windows, I don't think we will see any more public beta.

Just my view on the matter.

    You're probably totally correct.

In general you will have to uninstall or do a fresh install when going from one beta to another or to an RC. For some products you MAY be able to do an upgrade from the last beta or RC to the RTM version. However, that is NEVER guaranteed. When beta testing any product you should be prepared to do a complete reinstall at all times.
