Printer icon missing from sys tray (XP Prof SP2)

For as long as I can remember the printer icon has been visible on the sys tray but all of a sudden it has disappeared, I have checked in the "Start Menu Properties" and note that it is selected as "Always showing", I'm not so much bothered as to how it happened [like why the Word doc would not delete from the desktop - which I inquired about recently] but how it can be replaced and made to stay put. Thanx SF.

Is it the icon for the printer, or your printer's utilities?
If the former, I would expect that to only show when you are printing, if the latter, only if you have the utilities running and enabled to show in the systray.

SORRY Leif for not being clever enough to give a simple answer to your response, all I know is that as far back as I can remember the icon which has sat in the sys tray -when right clicked on- has resulted in the screen shot shown appearing on screen. From that menu I would select the "Printing Preferences" option then select what best suited what I was about to print. (ie) Most often it would be text but once in a while it would be a photo which obviously required option 4 or 5 to be selected. So you will from that I hope, know what answer I should be giving to your question. I hope that is not too muddy an answer..... sorry... If that makes better sense, how do I restore the appropriate icon back on to the sys tray so it stays put? Incidentally, for the time being I have put a printer shortcut on the desktop on which I right clicked to get the screen shot shown. I know it's not an issue to lose sleep over but seeing the icon has always been in that position I wondered why it suddenly went AWOL. SF.

If I drag a shortcut to my printer onto the quick launch bar then it displays that menu, but I haven't seen this in the system tray.
The printer icon that appears in the system tray when I am printing has a completely different menu.

Your screenshot seems to indicate that the icon is in the Quick Launch Toolbar rather than the System Tray or Notification Area. That would make more sense, as Leif said, it should only appear in the System Tray when the printer is printing.

If I am correct, just go into your printer folder an right click on the default printer and drag it to the quick Launch bar, drop it and choose Create Shortcut Here from the dropdown.

Re: Printer icon missing from sys tray (XP Prof SP2)

Hello gentlemen, just to tie this post up, the fact that the menu box position (as I call it) -as shown in the screen shot- was just above the taskbar was purely incidental and happened because I had positioned the printer icon shortcut a couple of inches above it (the taskbar) and not because the icon was on the quick start bar as it could well have been. I would never EVER question anything you guys write because you will have forgotten more than I will ever know about these things but I can assure you [though you may never have heard of it] that a printer icon was lurking on the sys tray because sometimes in the past -as I have indicated- when I wanted to print something with a different setting than a previous session, I simply right clicked on that icon and selected the quality of print required. Whatever happened to that icon matters little as I have simply dragged another printer shortcut icon to the Quick Start bar which is as convenient as if it was in the sys tray. Thanks for your responses... SF
One thing I have observed is what Leif wrote namely, that a printer icon does appear in the sys tray when the printer is being used.

Re: Printer icon missing from sys tray (XP Prof SP2)

Hello all. This is a sort of PS to this thread. Because I just encountered a fault with my Microsoft Photo Editor in which all the options in "Edit" were grayed out including that of "Paste as new image" which is the tab I most use and seeing a few other open files including the Lounge, disappeared from the taskbar in the past couple of hours, I thought I would perform a System Restore on the off chance it may rectify the glitch. Hey presto, the said grayed out tabs appeared as normal BUT, surprise - surprise; so did the printer icon in the sys tray which had been claimed, should not appear there unless the printer was in use. As I mentioned in a previous post I was certain it had been there as I had right clicked on it may times to change the printer settings & again -as the screen shot which was taken whilst the printer was not in use- shows. Granted it is a different menu to the one I included in post 754,001 but they both lead to the menu where the printing options can be changed. How bizarre and unpredictable are these things..... SF.
