    Boot from a flash drive

If HP tells me that my PC cannot boot from a flash drive, is that a motherboard issue, BIOS, or what?

    Regards,

Yes, motherboard or BIOS or a marketing decision or all of the preceeding.

    Joe:

I had suggested that I could "upgrade" the BIOS, and he said nix on that idea.

So then it must be a motherboard, yes? Therefore, if I so choose, which I doubt, I could "fix" it?

    Regards,
    Chuck

"fix it"? If that means buy a new system that you check out ahead of time then yes. But, if HP says a BIOS upate won't fix it you have to replace the motherboard at a minimum. I don't think you want to do that.

No, I don't. I guess that one goes in the basket of "lessons for next time..."

Re: Boot from a flash drive

I may be too myopic, but I don't know why any computer motherboard manufacturer, which includes BIOS by the way, would allow booting a computer with any external drive. That seems akin to a "security backdoor" in my opinion. Mebbe not...

My Sony laptop sees its (internal) CD/DVD drive as a USB device...

A security backdoor yes, which is very handy when you're attempting to clean-up a malware infested PC with a self-contained OS. Granted, CD/DVD drives work the same way, as long as they're operable. If there's a need to prevent unauthorized external drive booting, then a password needs to be set on the BIOS.

Also, on the off chance the system is beyond recovery and the data hasn't been backed up properly, having a USB OS able to burn CDs or DVDs is a huge benefit.

And as one other benefit I personally find very useful. When I feel the need to use the local coffee shop's free WiFi, I will boot my notebook using a USB drive that doesn't touch my hard disk. There's no reason to mount my data when I'm surfing the internet away from a trusted network.

The newer 'netbook' machines typically do not have an optical drive. So, you need to be able to boot from an external device to troubleshoot, install a new OS, or anything else you install from a CD/DVD.

I think some BIOSes let you password protect them so that the boot sequence cannot easily be changed (e.g., when the default is set to internal HD only and you want to enable CD or USB).

    Jefferson:

I've been able to switch around the sequence (CD, and hard drives - internal and external) but it doesn't haven't any "choice" for USB.

Re: Boot from a flash drive

That is very much a possibility Chuck. I hadn't used any USB bootable computers until about 2 years ago. Depending on the age of the motherboard and BIOS in your system, it could very well be unable to provide the USB boot option.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding out Chris...

    And here I thought I'd bought my last computer! <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>
