    Registry Hack (Vista SP1 Ultimate)

My inability to come up with the proper terminology is frustrating my search for a registry hack I applied some time ago. It performs the same function as TweakUI does in the attached graphic. Can anyone point me to the instructions for this?

    Thanks,
    Regards,
    PaulB

    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShell
If there is a value named BagMRU Size, set it to the number you want.
If there is no such value, create it first (Edit | New | DWord Value).

Note: since Windows XP SP2, the default value has been set to a much higher value than before; I assume that's true in Vista too.

You'd think the registry entry would be the same in Windows Vista as in Windows XP, but no, it has changed.

Hans and Big Al: Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I take it, Hans, that your reply relates to the Vista solution, while Big Al's relates to WinXP, am I right?

    Cheers,
    Regards,

That is correct. Microsoft changed the relevant registry entry.

And I must admit that I said what I did because you were using XP's TweakUI as a reference, even though we're now talking about Vista. I never dreamed the registry location would now be different and I didn't "really" look closely at what Hans had written. So, ( <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> ) we've learned two things together, huh? Sorry if I added any confusion.

No problem, Big Al. Reading your link (and its date) made it obvious that it related to WinXP. Some other loungers may benefit from reading it.

Re: Registry Hack (Vista SP1 Ultimate)

In trying to determine what figure to apply to BagMRU, I discovered that I have over 23,000 folders. I think maybe a little clean-up is in order here, but it does beg the question: should BagMRU reflect the number of folders on the computer, or the number of folders that are "customized"?

    Cheers,
    Regards,

It should reflect the number of customized folders, but why not set BagMRU Size to 30,000 or so? That'd be plenty for now.

(It's just the maximum number of folders for which Windows will remember customized settings)
