IE5 crashes all the time

I'm using the recommended IE 5.0 SP1 yet it crashed
quite frequently on me, usually with a cryptic
kernel32.dll stack error. It seems to be relatively
random though the thing that most often triggers it
is when attempting to copy the URL from the Address
box with a Ctrl-Insert. Is there any common solution
to this problem or it just another one of those "it
could be anything" things? I've also had similar crashes
with Netscape so I'd guess it's more of a Windows thing
than browser only. I'm using Win98SE.

Thanks,
mc

Re: IE5 crashes all the time

Hi
I had some IE5 bugs, but they seem to have vanished (I hope) since I updated to 5.5. Try that.

Hmmm. Woody recommended not updating to 5.5. Says that it is less stable. I don't know--just relaying what I've read.

There's a lot of things that cause crashes. I try to run with as few things loaded as possible. And I check my system files using sfc, my startup using msconfig, & deleting temp files often. I still crash, but not as often.

I have been runnig IE5.5 on 2 Me machines and one 98FE machine and have NOT had any problems with it. I am also running MS Office 2000 Pro or better on each machine and using Outlook 2000 as the email program.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I had one problem only with IE5.5 - editing Hotmail caused crashes (didn't take notice of my kids' complaints till it happened to me ). I reported it to Hotmail, who acknowledged this WAS a problem. It NOW ISN'T (seems fixed).
I regularly update my Browser using the Microsoft update site, and have had no problems that I can identify with any certainty. Once or twice a week my ISP kicks me off for no apparent reason, but it may be phone line noise.
I haven't read Woody's reasons, but personally have no problems with IE5.5. 3 x W98SE and 2 NT4 machines.

Just read some other users' problems - DON'T YA JUST HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS - especially when you don't know how to help!

If you receive a lot of stack errors, you can try adding the line:

minSPs=8

to the [386Enh] section of system.ini.

It will increase the number of extra stack pages.

The command will take up an additional 32kb of RAM, which should not significant on any modern machine.

That's pretty much what I'm talking about...
Windows is such a hodge-podge it's almost impossible
to track these things down conclusively.
kernel32.dll errors seem common enough but I haven't
found any good information on how to track down the
possible causes.
