Which Service Pack Do I Have? (Windows XP Professi

I found a thread that started with the URL:

    http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthread...vc=1#Post747148

In the second entry, message 747,150, Doc Watson replied, in part:

“I do not have SP3 on my system and feel much as you appear to... don't want it now or ever.”

In a later entry, message 747,360, Stuart R asked:

“Just out of interest. What is the reason that you do not want SP3 on your computer?”

The OP replied, providing a reason having to do with IE7. That was dismissed as not relevant since IE7 is not part of SP3.

Doc Watson, why don’t you want SP3, now or ever?

I am confused about my own machine, which I purchased last March. The builder, GamePC, installed an OEM version of XP Pro. When I run a Belarc profile, I am told that the OS is Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600). However, when I scroll down to the “Installed Microsoft Hotfixes” section of the report, I find 97 entries for SP3 that predate the delivery of the machine and 6 that carry later dates. There are even 26 entries for SP4, the most recent dated 1/19/09, called KB958687.

In fact, Belarc reports under Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes; All required security hotfixes (using the 01/13/2009 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) have been installed.

This suggests that I not only have SP3, but also some SP4. Is there confusing terminology from MS that is misleading me?

I have the SP3 and SP4 hotfixes entered in an Excel spreadsheet that I can supply, if it is relevant. I don’t want to burden the WOPR servers.

Today, Secunia is telling me that I still have something missing. When I click on “download solution” it insists on opening IE 7 and going to the MS updates website. Is there a way in the Secunia report to determine what I thinks I need?

    Thanks,

To determine what SP is installed, right click on My Computer and select Properties. The resulting window will tell you what you want to know. AFAIK, there is not and will not be a SP4 for XP. The reference in your hotfixes must be about another program like Office.

As to why I don't want SP3 on my system, I'm unwilling to install something as large as SP3 that has the potential to cause a variety of problems with an existing system configuration (read other installed programs) and provides so little in the way of useful changes. I have downloaded SP3 and have slipstreamed it on an XP install disk with SP1 & SP2 and would do a clean install with that. This is my opinion and not that of many other Loungers. But that's why they call these things personal computers.

    Doc,

    Thank you for your clarification.

Since it is only a 98 KB file, I will upload the Excel file I created, mostly to get a count of the hotfixes. It contains all of the KB numbers and the dates of the ones I installed since last March.

    Do you use Belarc Advisor?

I became aware of it when my wife's HDD died and we had to rebuild the software on her laptop.

Are you sure you've not installed any of these?

    Thanks again,

I think I should gracefully bow out of this and let someone else address you KB issue. I am not one to keep up with all of the patches and usually don't even install them for a month or more after they have been released. I protect my system well enough with software and common sense and worry little about "malicious" hackers getting in because of a security hole in Windows. I use Word regularly for my own personal tasks, but have little use for the other Office programs. I don't update Office and never patch it unless Redmond shoves the patch down my throat.

As I said, my attitude about patches is different than most others attitude. <img src=/S/rantoff.gif border=0 alt=rantoff width=66 height=37>

When you see a hotfix listing in Belarc or another product the fix descriptions often refer to the service pack in which the fix will be integrated. The description does not guarantee that they will be integrated in that service pack. Nor does it guarantee that the service pack will even be released. AFAIK, right now SP-3 is the last service pack for XP.

When reading a Microsoft KB article be sure to carefully examine the list of affected operarting systems or office versions. With the size of the lists it is very easy to misread a release or service pack version.

For a different viewpoint about service packs see StuartR's <post:=754,442>post 754,442</post:>. That is the position with which myself and many others agree.

I agree with Joe, and wouldn't bother much what third-party tools tells me about a Windows installation, though they of course can and are many times correct and report what is installed. I would look at what Windows’ applications tell me, perhaps together with Automatic Updates, Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

With the use of third-party tools, people who otherwise wouldn't dig into the registry and look at its update keys (see screen shot), suddenly see a lot of updates often grouped in some way. As Joe says, if there will be an integration then there is where it belong, the next SP level. In the case of Windows XP, SP3 is the latest and the last, post SP3 fixes can be sorted under SP4.

To check SP level, do as Doc said, via My Computer, or Control Panel, or Winkey+Pause.

I have one machine missing SP3, and it is perfectly OK to add SP2/SP3 security updates to that one. But for new installs service pack 3 makes a great start. It is also OK to install it on a SP2 PC; many millions have it running with no problems.
