    SP3 (XP {Prof SP2)

Just a quickie, I notice Woody recommends that now is the time to upgrade to SP3. Having ran Secunia regular and updating as & when directed is it imperative to avail ones self of the said upgrade and what benefits is one missing if failing to do so? Regards SF

Windows XP SP3 is not an earth-shaking update; its main benefit is that it integrates all fixes and updates released between August, 2004 (when SP2 was released) and April, 2008 (when SP3 was released). It doesn't contain any must-have features.

It's not imperative, but it is certainly advisable.

This upgrade has now been out for a considerable time and has been well tested, so it is very unlikely to cause problems. It provides a baseline (a known good set of patches tested together, from which you can move forward). New patches will have had far more testing in an environment with SP3 installed than on something with SP2 and a random set of patches, so you are less likely to run into problems with any future patches.

The way I look at this is that I know very few cases where installation of a patch has led to catastrophic failure of a PC - I know this does occasionally happen but this is rare. I know of many cases where a PC has become infected because someone didn't keep their patches up to date.
