Word 97 - columns and page numbering (Word 97)

Has anyone found that adding columns within section breaks prevents automatic page numbering and reliable inserting style refs (i.e. Heading 1) into the running head?

    Got a fix?

Just to clarify, changing the number of columns for anything except the entire section inserts a section break because column definitions are in sections.

I haven't found that it interferes with automatic page numbering so long as page numbering isn't set to restart at the beginning of the section.

I'm not sure what you mean when you talk about the running head. Are we talking about the header which is viewed in headers and footers? If so, what becomes unreliable about the STYLEREF?

If you put a section break inside of or at the beginning of a heading style, you may capture the section break inside of the style.

    Hi Brian,

I'm not sure about the problem you are having, however there were a couple of page numbering bugs (incorrect SectionPages/NumPages) that the Post Service Release for Word 97 corrected. This patch also contains a fix for Word hanging while navigating through the header that contain a StyleRef field.

Perhaps this is the problem you are encountering?

If so then here is some information for obtaining it:

Note that SR1 and SR2 must be installed prior to installing the patch.

I'll keep working with these section breaks and columns until I have a hard fix on what is happening. It just seems to me that whenever I try to do anything 'clever' with Word that it fights back. I have a contents page at the start of each manual that I write and I want it to be page 0 but of course that must not print. So a section break is needed. Then sometimes I need to put tables in columns to fit all the pin-out stuff on one page as the client requests. More section breaks.

I am used to having the chapter title (Heading 1) repeat in the header each page except the first - this is the insert style ref.

I find the style ref stays out of date fixed at the first chapter name and the page numbering resets for each chapter.

Am I trying to get Word to be a DTP package which it just isn't? I have SP2 and will apply the Jet3.5 update if it will help.

    Hi Brian,

<<I have a contents page at the start of each manual that I write and I want it to be page 0 but of course that must not print. So a section break is needed>>

Instead of a section break could you use "Different First Page" in File/Page Setup/Layout tab? Then you could just start the page numbering for that section at 0 and remove the page number for the first page of the section.

Hi, Brian. I've done big-time DTPing in Word 97. If you want me to give you a sample of how I'd lay something out, go ahead and email what you have and I'll gladly take a look at it.

Many people use columns to have side-by-side lists or other, and I hate them. I always manage to get them into Word tables whenever possible. Continuous section breaks suck ('scuse the term) and, at all costs, I don't use them.

    Hi Brian,

Some reference pages that may help you:

Applying SR2 is vital as is the "leap year fix" if you want the best regagination you can get in Word 97.

Re: Word 97 - columns and page numbering (Word 97)

    Thanks for the help everyone.
The reason I don't just use different odd/even footers and delete the start at '0' zero pagenumber to avoid a page number for the contents page (but one for first actual page)?
    1) Contents page may be more than one page
    2) Client needs to edit my work - and can not be relied upon to delete unwanted numering after updating the contents

Modifying very large tables to achieve the same result as using columns is counter intuitive - and only a good idea as a work around to seek reliability in a product that clearly lacks it when driven as a DTP package.

I certainly would not want to go back to using text boxes (having had to spend hours cleaning them out of work that bombed at a client's site. All the text boxes lost their anchors and sat one on top of the other like 'dinner plates' on the first page!)

Style Ref in Headers automates an otherwise manual process - but either columns or just section breaks confuse Word into picking up the wrong Styles.

WIll XP have these nice doc automation features and yet be bug free and robust, I wonder?

    Brian

P.S How do I customise tables and the contents and save this as a style to develop a client look and feel for all their work? - will XP have this style feature as Ventura does?
