How do I set my document so that the last tab I hit will automatically be the left margin of the paragraph I am typing. My Word used to do this but now it doesn't and I can't figure out how to change it. Thanks.

Perhaps the setting you mean is the check box "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces" in the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options...
I have that box checked but that is evidently not what I want. What I want is when I am typing a line of text, and then I hit the tab to start a new section (on that same line), I want to not have to hit the enter (and all the tabs up until that point on the next line) and just keep typing, and the rest of what I am typing in that section stays within that last tabbed area until I hit return. I don't know if I am making much sense.....sorry...I just know I used to be able to do this , and now I can't and it is sooooo frustrating!!
I've never seen that in Word, sorry. Perhaps someone else will have a suggestion.
Or do you mean a hanging indent? You can set that in the Ruler (see screenshot) or in the Format | Paragraph dialog.
YES, YES THAT IS IT! Thank you so very much!!!
