Mysterious changes to sheet (2003 or 2007)

    Hello,

The attached screen shot shows what happens to one of the fields in this excel file.

The 'General' cell attriubute changes to 'Date' format automatically.

This is happening to many cells in the file.

I am using both Excel 2003 and 2007 for different files and maybe this is contributing to this issue.

But it seems to affect some fields only.

Any help would be appreciated very much.

    AS.

Does the cell contain a date or a time? Is the time a calculated value that maybe is resulting in a negative?
    Regards,

No it contains textual content; prose.

I keep changing it to 'General' but it keeps reverting to 'Date' format!

Well I've attached the file itself now with the problem field as well...

A typical merged cells problem I suspect.

    Try if this helps:

    Unmerge the cells
Set the format of ALL cells you want to merge
    Merge the cells again.

The Normal style of your workbook has d-mmm-yy as number format, so that date format will be the default!
I recommend setting the number format of the Normal style to General.

Well I've tried both those recommendations and hope that this time it will not revert once more.

Thank you for your great suggestions.
