Search doesn't work is there an alternative (XP)

    Dear Loungers,

I have known that search doesn't always work but now it's a nuisance and I need an alternative. I am searching a large drive, with a large number of files, for any files named as follows: nn V - *. where nn is a two digit number and * is a wild card so anything else. and yes the file names do have embedded spaces which if I use in a search string act like a wild card, and the hyphen isn't recognised - it's probably acting like some soert of boolean operator, In addition case sensitive seems to be ignored.

So I either need a syntax that works in File explorer or an alternative search engine. I should add that the files are on a NAS drive. Any suggestions?

    thanks................ liz

I've had good results with Windows Search 4.0 both at home and at work.

I found Google Desktop Search a bit to intrusive and removed it after a month or so, but it is a very good search tool for large HDs. You can always install it, find what you want and then remove it if you aren't happy with it.

    liz,

Been using LOCATE 32 for some time now.
It's VERY fast and flexible in it's searches. You do have to update it's database of your files to keep it current but that only takes a few mins.
