ShadowProtect Special

At the outset I should say that I have NO business or otherwise relationship with the company other than the fact that I'm a satisfied customer! As a long time user of WinZip, I received an email from them today advertising a special $59 price for ShadowProtect and I was reminded of <!profile=Rebel>Rebel<!/profile>'s excellent pricing analysis in <post:=751,608>post 751,608</post:> fairly recently.

I followed the link in the WinZip email leading to here: http://store.storagecraft.com/acb/stores/1...03C0.aspx?SID=1

I can't imagine this offer would be restriced to ONLY WinZip users, so if you're in the market for a great backup imaging product, you ought to try the above link. It's a great buy, IMHO. Hopefully, some will post back to correct me if the above link turns out to be invalid, but I hope not.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Hi Al,

As a user of WinZip, I also received the offer. What is also great is that a 2 license user pack is available at a substantial discount... which includes one year's maintenance. I'm thinking of getting the 2 license pack for my test bed and wife's PC.

Cheers, Bob

Thanks for that link Al. I'm going to urge a few of my friends (one of whom just learned a very costly lesson when his drive crashed) to take advantage of this offer.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Thanks for the link, Big Al. I guess procrastination sometimes does pay off. Rebel's informative reply to my original post kinda convinced me to go with ShadowProtect but other things came up before I took any action. Tried your link tonight and, while I am not a WinZip client, I was able to buy and download ShadowProtect 3.3 and the .iso file.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Regards,
PaulB

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Hi Big Al, do you know if I were to try out the evaluation version would I need to uninstall Acronis True Image first? I'm using version 9 and it does the job for me but I'm interested in the Hardware Independent Restore capabilities of ShadowProtect.

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Re: ShadowProtect Special

I don't think there would be a conflict but I can't be sure since I haven't done so. Of course, if you run a good backup image with TI first, I suppose you could always recover to that...

At the time I was changing from TI to SP there was a definite conflict in some specific file whose name I can't remember now. So I uninstalled TI when I did my SP testing. However, I'm pretty sure that StorageCraft solved that one and there's a post here in The Lounge about it, if we can find it. Let's go looking... I think I also had a PM from <!profile=Rebel>Rebel<!/profile> about it but that will have long since expired.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

More digging...

In <!profile=Rebel>Rebel<!/profile>'s post at <post:=751,608>post 751,608</post:> he mentions in the third paragraph from the end, the conflict with snapman.sys (the file name I couldn't remember) so it looks like the conflict DOES still exist.

On the StorageCraft web pages, in the FAQ for Desktop Edition there is a paragraph on "crashes" (BSOD) ("Why does my system crash...") that also confirms the conflict: StorageCraft Support Forums

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Thanks Big Al,

So basically to try this I'd need to make a backup of my system drive with Acronis installed. Uninstall Acronis (which is not easy), and then install ShadowProtect for testing. If I find it doesn't work as I expect then I'd be able to recover my original system using my Acronis bootup disc. Does this sound OK - any snags I've missed? My C: drive is a dedicated disk so it doesn't have any other partitions on it.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Chris,
If I can jump in here, you must uninstall Acronis TI before installing ShadowProtect. BUT, the uninstall does not completely remove everything. See this post in the SP Forums for instructions on how to remove the remnants.

If ShadowProtect is not to your liking, you can then uninstall SP and reinstall TI. I don't think it's necessary to "recover your original system" using the TI boot disk, but that of course is up to you.

NOTE - if you happen to have Acronis Disk Director installed, you will run into the same conflict (DD uses the same snapman.sys driver). There is a workaround for that however. Hope this helps.

Thanks, John. what is the workaround - I do use Disk Director as well.

Best wishes,

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Chris,
To toss in my here, I am back to using Acronis TI 2009 ( the final version has been fixed ) and DD10. This after my very unfortunate experience with SP and it's HIR feature. The only reason I went to SP was because of my large hardware upgrade and thought it could work for me. ( it didn't )

Since I don't plan any near future significant hardware changes, I am well satisfied with Acronis, who BTW, have made some BIG improvements in customer service and communications.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

If someone doesn't want to dig around in the registry, Revo Uninstaller Freeware would probably do the job. It provides a system backup, and then after using the program's uninstaller, in this case TI, it delves into the registry and highlights all related files, folders, and keys for further removal. A user has four options in the uninstall mode, plus a number of other I've used Revo a number of times and haven't had a problem.

Re: ShadowProtect Special

Hi, I think Revo Uninstaller is good and I use it but it didn't help me last time I tried to uninstall True Image. I came to the conclusion that Acronis were hiding entries in the registry. I wrote and asked them point blank about it but as I remember never got a straight answer.

You can request a set of updated drivers from Acronis (see this post ).
