Shortcuts fro shutdown in Win 7

    I have a shortcut

    %SystemRoot%System32shutdown.exe /h

that [hopefully] would put the PC into hibernate mode.

It seems to work, but then the machine turns back on.

Is this a Win 7 issue, or is there a shortcut adjustment I need?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Sometimes I hafta smile when I read one of your "experiments" Chuck, 'cause I think when you go from one OS to the "next" your efforts are concentrated on trying to make the old work with the new. <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19> Just teasing of course.

Have you tried any of the other switches? You've used the HIBERNATE switch and maybe you need to try something else - see attached. (Sorry for the size of the attachment. There are further explanations below what I clipped and I didn't include it all.)

Anything in your event log pointing to a cause?

Anything in this How to Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 7 article that helps?

    Al / Leif:

    Once again, yous-guyses answers worked.

Doc, I do do a bit of that, but it's actually a bit the reverse. When I see a "new" o/s that really is an improvement, I just try sometimes to drag the features of the old into the new that I really made use of.

'Sides, what in the world would keep you all entertained if it wasn't for me? Huh?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

Re: Shortcuts for shutdown in Win 7

    Joe, I'm not sure.

The "Hibernate" wasn't showing as a choice on the Start Menu power button. I went into a cmd window and saw that my system would only support S1 and S3, which, I believe,
meant that it wouldn't support Standby. So I went back and set everything to defaults. Then I went back into the cmd window and did a "powercfg -h on."

Funny thing, the hiberfil.sys is only 2,415.370,240 -- isn't that supposed to be the size of physical memory, which on this machine is 3 gigs?

That's when [I believe] I saw the "Hibernate" reappear on the Start button menu. I tried it and it seemed to be working.

Then I went in and set the display to "Never" to allow the screen saver to work, and set the power button to go into hibernate.

Now, although Hibernate IS showing as the chosen option on the Start button (power button), it is NOT one of the choices when I click the arrow (?).

And when I just click to power button, it seems that it is going into Hibernate, but it kicks right back on again.

I may have finally found something that is gonna get the better of me.

    Regards,
    Chuck

As long as you've got it working, I'd not dig too deeply. I just thought you might remember the steps if it was pretty easy. Remember you have a BETA version of Windows. You may want to check the Microsoft newsgroups if you need more information (or is that confusion?).

    Joe:

Yeah, I could kick myself in that I did (I thought) have it working...

    Oh well...

Maybe the final Windows will be more agreeable.

Re: Shortcuts fro shutdown in Win 7

I went back to a clean install of Windows 7, and "hibernate" "Standby", and Shutdown don't work there either.

According to "Pwercfg", my motherboard supports Hibernate and Standby", so it's got to be a Windows 7 issue.

I've file a report on same.

You might want to read How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP. Even though it is for XP the general concepts are still the same for Windows 7.

Re: Shortcuts fro shutdown in Win 7

    Thanks Joe.

The problem is that that page deals [primarily] with inability to come out of hibernation / sleep. Mine comes out of it fine...Too fine.

If I start with a **clean** install of Windows 7 -- NOTHING added -- I can get it to go into Standby / hibernation -- once. Then then next time I try it, it pops right out of it after about 12 seconds.

My drivers are all up to DAT.

More to the point, it works fine in Vista.

    ?

Then here is more for your reading pleasure. Since Windows 7 is closely relate to Vista see How to troubleshoot performance issues with standby, hibernate, and resume in Windows Vista & more links for Vista at troubleshoot hibernate vista. Also, links at hybrid sleep.

Re: Shortcuts fro shutdown in Win 7

Chuck, have you gone into Device Manager in Windows 7 to see which device(s) are set to "wake up" your computer? Some, like your network or wi-fi card, may be inadvertently waking your computer.

Are you dual-booting your computer (Vista/Win7)?

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

    Paul:

No I'm not dual-booting...but I didn't think of checking the hardware...!

    Thanks, I'll let you know...
