windows explorer context menu additions (XP Pro v5 sp3)

I installed Adobe CS3 over the never-hiccup DW MX (boss's orders, sigh). I want to add Photoshop (PS) to the 'Open with' option on the right click context menu (PS was there before CS3). I tried to add PS to the Tools/Folder options/file types/ associate box using the browse, finding the file and selecting it AND the box will not accept my choice. This is just for the association, which is not what I really want, as jpgs, gifs, et al. should open with the program I previously selected as default. I want PS as a valid alternate program on the 'Open with' menu. ¬°Finally! The question (grin). How do I add this option to the context menu?

I'm not familiar with the programs you're working with, but let me try this. If you right-click a file in Windows Explorer and select Open With, you should be able to either select the correct program from the included list or browse to it with the Browse button. The important part is the tick-box for "Always use..."

And even if right-click doesn't have an Open With selection, sometimes (not always?) using Open instead will let you get to the same screens I mentioned above.

Am I off-course on what you want/need to do?

Yes, the box SHOULD return whatever program I select. I select photoshop (PS) from the browse box. The box returns to the window you show, WITHOUT the selected program. Thus, I am asking for someone to help me add the program to the select list in the option box. I did this way back when - in an earlier version of windows - and I cannot find the folder where I add the program name. BTW, when you use Open, it opens the default associated program - from the window you show. This is the window that will Not let me add or select the PS program, even though I can browse to the correct folder and select the PS.exe, click the open option. It will not show the program I just selected! Also, BTW, I do not want it to be the default associated program, just to be an additional 'open with' option when I have a specific need for it, from the context menu, of course (grin).

I'm sorry Jerry, I didn't mean to steer you wrong. I just tried an example on my system and it works for me. I right-clicked on a GIF file and selected Open With. When the window comes up, one of my installed programs, Paint.Net is NOT listed anywhere because I've never used it to open a GIF file. So, I used the Browse button to find and select Paint.Net. Because of your comment AND the fact that we don't want this to be the "default" I did NOT tick the "Always use..." box. The GIF opened just fine in Paint.Net so I shut it all down.

After re-starting Windows Explorer and trying again with a right-click on another GIF file, Paint.Net is now included in the Open With list, along with all the programs that were there before.

And on a parallel note, I did a Google on "add to context menu in XP windows explorer" and got lots of hits. Some of that software is too expensive to even consider, but there might be something out there that you can use. I'm sorry, but other than this, I'm out of ammo...

This registry hack/edit is for adding Notepad to the right click menu, but it should work if you substitute PS for Notepad.

Just a little aside. I've been using open expert for a while. It adds a second, configurable open with item to explorer context menus.
