    Re: Domain and web hosting,

Depends on your definition of cheap.

I would recommend 1&1 who I have been using for many years.

    Re: Domain and web hosting,

How urgent is it and how critical that you get it? I have registered numerous domains, and there is a difference between services that operate in real time and those that do not.

1&1 appears to do registrations during Central European business hours, as the registrar is its affiliate Schlund in Germany. Prices are excellent, but there is a chance that someone else will register it during the gap. 1&1 does offer anonymous whois listing for free, which is nice for personal projects where you don't want tons of spam. And if you get a hosting package, the domain registration is included free. Edit: U.K. offerings may differ from North American offerings.

GoDaddy (a little more than 1&1) and Network Solutions (expensive) do registrations that appear to be fully automated and therefore go through any time of day or night or on weekends.

I'm sure there are many other options, but these are three that I have used quite a bit.

As for cheap hosting, you can get a good shared virtual hosting account at 1&1 for $4-5/month (paid quarterly). If you run a PHP site, make sure to install an .htaccess file to use PHP5 (more secure than PHP4, but they default to PHP4 for compatibility reasons). Hosting info: http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hosting

If you like to tinker or know Linux, you might prefer a WestHost VPS account for $4-10/month (paid annually). With a VPS setup, your server is shared, but your actual virtual machine is all yours, so you are allowed much more access to configuration files, you can customize logging, et cetera. On the other hand, it can be more of a challenge to administer, and dollar for dollar, 1&1 offers more bandwidth (actual traffic) per month. Hosting info: http://www.westhost.com/package-compare.html (If you want me to get a referral credit for your signing up with WestHost, PM me for details. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

    Re: Domain and web hosting,

If you prefer a UK based company, take a look at 34sp.com. I've just transferred a site and its domain name form another company that was a reseller and had very poor technical support. So far 34sp.com have been very quick to respond, both to a pre-sale query, and to setting up the site and transferring the domain. Pricing depends on the capacity that you need, and starts at £17.50 a year
