AVG Won't Connect

I installed AVG 8 on a friend's computer, and it works ok EXCEPT when it tries to update it cannot connect. This is rather strange in that IE will connect with AVG. In fact, I was able to navigate to the AVG update page, copy the latest updates and manually update AVG. BUT the automatic update feature fails to connect. I checked Windows firewall and it has permissions set for AVG. Is there something else I'm missing here?

Is there a third party Firewall installed?

Re: AVG Won't Connect

I gave it a brief look, but a firewall may be there that I didn't detect. He originally had both Trend Micro and AVG installed so I uninstalled Trend Micro. That cleared up some of his problems but the one with AVG updates remains. The next time I get a chance I'll inspect his system more closely. Like lots of people, he downloads and installs just about everything that he thinks might help, and that's not a good idea.

Re: AVG Won't Connect

I got a second look at the system and could find no other firewalls. Somewhere along the way nearly all AVG connections are blocked. I assume this is done by his ISP.
I went looking for his router but couldn't fine one! However, he has some sort of satellite connection into a commercial communications company he is associated with. I suspect that the blocking occurs within the ISP and I suggested he ask them about it. I could connect to many other web pages, but not AVG's. I'm waiting to hear if his ISP has anything to say about it.
Count on me to run into the really weird cases!

Hi, Chuck -

I also could not connect for updates. I resolved my problem by removing AVG and then downloading it again, installing the updates and - so far - all is well.

I originally loaded AVG from a thumb drive, but not only will it not update, this guy's computer blocks access to the AVG download site!

Sounds awfully suspicious to me. Isn't that a classic symptom that the computer has ALREADY been infected by a virus, or some other sort of malware?

Chuck,

Have your tried Acer's suggestion of removing AVG?

Run Trend Micro from the on-line link here in the Lounge.
Re install AVG ( not from your thumb drive ) if you must use that particular program.

Re: AVG Won't Connect

I've reinstalled AVG from a flash drive, but as stated previously, his computer (or his server) blocks access to AVG's download page. He has run an antivirus scan as well as running SpyBot with no indication of any problems -- I suppose there could be a virus somewhere. I'm waiting to hear what his ISP has to say, as I suspect that he is hooked via satellite into his company's network and may be behind a network firewall or something similar that's blocking access. I'll suggest a different AV program to him.

He originally had both AVG and Trend Micro running, so I uninstalled both and then installed the latest AVG. However, AVG wouldn't update and subsequent tries to connect to AVG were blocked. Other web pages work OK, but not AVG.

Re: AVG Won't Connect

I almost hate to say this but as many "struggles" as I've read about on AVG both here in The Lounge and elsewhere, I think I'd be tempted to switch to Avast!.

AL.
I have switched to Avast and never looked back.
No update download problems or any other for that matter.

Re: AVG Won't Connect

I had AVG om my Windows 7 machine, but it kept wanting me to upgrade with a warning that it was about to expire.
Went to AVAST and NOT a word about upgrading but I hear the daily message about the daily "Updates" .

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You did notice that, in Settings, you can turn OFF the sound if you like didn't you? It doesn't bother me 'cause it only takes a couple of seconds.

Re: AVG Won't Connect - OFF TOPIC

Dave,
Could it possibly be that you did as I did (on my beta); downloaded the full product trial? I know it is. Then of course it starts to remind about it's going to expire, and encourage you to, not upgrade since it is the full product even if not the Internet Security suite, but to buy the product.

You know what, it's perfectly possible to install the free version (but I have not checked if there are any problems with it and Windows 7 beta, should not be any difference since the free is a subset of the full). In my case I chose the trial since I wanted to check it out (I already have the free ver., and what could be better than a temporary beta install (if it worked in the beta, that is).
