    Inserting a link in Word doc (w2003)

    Hi

    I want to include a link to a website in my Doc which I will then turn into a pdf.

    However when I click the link
    I get a message

    The site can't be found. HTTP.1.0 404.

    I've copied the link from the browser so I know it's not a typing error.

    The target site is https.www...... Does that make a difference?

    thanks

    Here is an example of a Word document with a link to an https: URL, does it appear correct to you?

    Hey thanks for getting back so quickly

    This is the link I'm wanting to include.

    https://www.sendoutcards.com/49721

    And the doc is attached.
    Page 5 Row 16.

    It all looks OK in the doc but it doesn't work when I click it.

    Your link behaves the same for me. I have no idea why!

    I think it must be something at the web site end, as it works fine if you remove the /49721 from the URL and just link to https://www.sendoutcards.com

    It's always a relief when an expert can't figure my problems either. :-)

    It's still frustrating that it's not fixed but at least I know I wasn't wasting someone's time with a simple problem
    that I should have known better.

    Hey Stuart, thanks so much for looking.

    Andrew

    PS I've got another one :-)

    I want to include a text link to a book at Amazon but the code they give to paste in is too big for the WinWord wizard. I've tired shortening it using budurl
    but that doesn't work either.

    I'm not familiar with budurl, but have you tried tinyurl?

    I just gave tinyurl a go and a similar result - it didn't work.

    This is the Amazon link
    Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)

    but it goes to a tinyurl page saying it can't redirect.

    Hadders,

    The thing you provided is not a URL, it is a bit of html code that includes a URL, as well as a link to an image and some formatting information too. The url in there is simply http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006124189...ASIN=006124189X, and this URL will work fine in Word.

    Here is a breakdown of what else you included...

    <img src=/w3timages/blackline.gif width=33% height=2>

    <a <font color=blue>this introduces an anchor in the web page</font color=blue>
    href=<font color=blue>this introduces the URL</font color=blue>
    "http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006124189X?ie=UTF8&tag=socceforma-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeAS IN=006124189X" <font color=blue>this is the url that we link to</font color=blue>
    ><font color=blue> this marks the end of the url</font color=blue>
    Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials) <font color=blue>This is the text to display on the page</font color=blue>
    [/url]<font color=blue>This is the end of the anchor</font color=blue>

    <img <font color=blue>This is a completely separate html tag, marking the beginning of an image</font color=blue>
    src= <font color=blue>This introduces the filename of the image file</font color=blue>
    "http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=socceforma-20&l=as2&o=1&a=006124189X" <font color=blue> this is the image filename </font color=blue>
    width="1" height="1" border="0" <font color=blue>these parameters set the height, width and border of the image</font color=blue>
    alt="" <font color=blue>This says not to display any alternative text if the browser doesn't display images</font color=blue>
    style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" <font color=blue>These are more image attributes, showing how it should be displayed</font color=blue>
    /><font color=blue> and this marks the end of the image</font color=blue>

    <img src=/w3timages/blackline.gif width=33% height=2>

    The use of an image that is 1 pixel high, 1 pixel wide and has no border is a bit tricksy, it is done to create an entry in the web server log file, rather than to display an image! The whole thing would display on a web page as
    Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)
