    Ghost Notification Icon?

If there is an item showing as one of the Notification Area Icons, and yet the program isn't on the system (anymore), how do you get rid of the indicator?

    Regards,

    Re: Ghost Notification Icon?

Was the program uninstalled properly and COMPLETELY?
Check for leftover startup entries using something like AUOTRUNS .
Use a good uninstaller like REVO Uninstaller to get all of the bits and pieces of the old program out of the way.
I can give you links to both of them if you you need them.

    Bob:

I went back, and re-installed, and then using an uninstaller (not Windows') I uninstalled, but the item i still there.

It is/was ESET Smart Security 4.0.68.0.

Oh well...betas are betas, aren't they? I just would like to figure out where that info is beoing stored...

You won't get something in the notification area on XP, Vista, or 7 unless something is running. Did you try Autoruns as Bob suggested?

    Joe:

I didn't see the program, nor did Autoruns' "Find" do so either.

AND I did a registry search.

The phantom isn't showing up...but it's there. See attached. It's the "egui.exe." It showed up when I had installed ESET Smart Security.

    Chuck,
Hello, This may sound "basic" but , do a search ( windows - f ) Check advanced, bet that you will find many "leftovers" .I use Revo as well and find leftovers most of the time ( mostly somewhere in program data files) Regards

    Re: Ghost Notification Icon?

    I don't know guys...

I've done a drive search for a filename egui.exe, or a file containing same. I can't find either.

But it's still showing in the notification display.

    ??

    Got me!?

Have you changed the Windows 7 search to include .exe files and "Program Files" folders in the indexing?

    Re: Ghost Notification Icon?

    Chuck,
I forgot to mention, that i had a similar problem (with Nero trial software ) after i had uninstalled every bit that i could find, and old nero icons were still showing up here and there. i think that they were hiding in a file somewhere under a different name (other than Nero) My solution was to do a Acronis full image recovery to get rid of them! It worked. Regards

    Re: Ghost Notification Icon?

    Fred:

I've run a scan of my entire disk looking for the text string of the name showing in the notification. Not looking for Windows' notification string necessarily, but at least the string *somewhere*, as it would have to be there to show up.

    But it's NOWHEE!

So how is it showing up? It's showing as the ESET virus database...

    *?*

    Regards,
    Chuck

I haven't changed anything in the indexing yet, I don't believe.
