Nero download size

I Just had a visit from a friend offering some tips on the use of Nero and she could not get my download to function properly. We had a look in the Add or Remove section and noticed that the installed Nero is said to be 323MB in size whereas (as the screen shot shows) the disc is said to contain 524 MB of data. Is this discrepancy because installation - and other data - is on the disc, therefore normal or should the first screen shot show more MB in the first pic? Regards.

    Re: Nero download size

In the first place, the size of a program as displayed in the Add or Remove Programs control panel is known to be wildly inaccurate. You can't rely on it.

In the second place, CDs usually show the full size of the disk, not the amount of space actually used. So you can't rely on that either.

But of course, that doesn't solve your problem.

As ever, thanks Hans. Looks like it's back to the drawing board. Cheers.

The answer to the alleged discrepency could simply be that the disc contains everything which is not necessarily included during installation for various reasons.

    Re: Nero download size

Hi Jeff...that's the notion I had when penning the original post. Kinda confirms what I was thinking as far as the discrepancy between the two MB figures but as Hans pointed out, they are not reliable figures. Yep, it does seem 181 MB is a lot for just the installation data, but then, that is over the horizon of my perception about these complexities. Just now I tried to convert a video in Real Player using Nero so it will play in any DVD player but it seems the said software will not recognize that format so it looks like Nero is limited regarding what it will recognize & convert. May try ConvertXtoDVD and see what it is capable of. Regards.

What's the format of the file you are trying to convert?

    Re: Nero download size

Hi Jeff. Sorry if how I worded my post was not as clear as it could have been, the phrase [ Just now I tried to convert a video in Real Player using Nero ] should maybe have read; "Just now I tried to convert a video that was downloaded in Real Player" ... using Nero but it would not recognize RP. I was assured that Nero 7 was capable of converting most video formats but it seems RP is not one of them, neither are those free to download from the web by Google. This either implies the limitations of Nero 7 or there is something amiss with the download I have. Cheers.

    Re: Nero download size

NP In my experience Real Player plays its own game, i.e., its formats are proprietary. I have refused to install anything even remotely associated with RP years ago due to its invasive nature, sorta like AOL. I don't have it handy, but I do believe there is something called, "Real Player Alternative" which will play RP files of all types. I'm sure someone else will be along who will point you to this free program or some other than is capable of doing what you want. The problem you are going through is not the fault of Nero but the restrictions made by RP.

    Re: Nero download size

Hi Jeff. How right you are about RP, as for Real Player Alternative, I seem to recall this package being recommended to me last year as being better than RP but after downloading it I experienced no end of problems which were made worse by the fact that I unfortunately uninstalled RP and when, after deleting RPA I found I could not install RP again so sought the advice on another forum. After numerous exchanges of lengthy posts I was able to download RP again and forthwith decided to steer clear of videos in RP but one site in particular that I log on to seems to major on presenting videos in that format hence the occasional download in that format. I have just done a lengthy conversion of some videos in WMP using Nero 7 and thought I had eventually surmounted the hurdle especially since the Explore tab shows all the tracks burned to DVD (see below) but when I come to play them the screen is blacked out & there is no sound so it seems Nero is destined for the bin. Regards again.
