    Net Framework (Vista HP)

MS Update has offered me the .NET Framework for download ... Woody says 'hold off' so I am.
    But what is it?
I have read what I can and it seems to be for developers etc so why am I offered it. Is it because it is associated with MS Silverlight, Visual C ++ Redistributable which seem to be loaded on my laptop ... not that I ever use these as far as I know!
Looking for an expert please to 'explain' in layman terms!
    Ron

    Re: Net Framework (Vista HP)

The .NET Framework contains the runtime components that are needed to run applications that have been created using one of the programming languages in Microsoft Visual Studio. Sharing these components make it possible to keep the individual applications relatively small, because the compiler doesn't need to include them in each application.

If you currently don't have the .NET Framework, you don't have any applications that use it (they'd refuse to run without it), so you don't really need to install it.
If you ever install an application that requires the .NET Framework, it'll tell you. So you can wait until that time.

Thanks Hans. I did a search for Net Framework on my laptop and it pointed me to the following ... so I must have had it installed with something! What programme types could that be given that I ain't a clue about MS Visual Studio.
I guess that I should download once Woody gives the 'all clear'?

    Re: Net Framework (Vista HP)

The .NET Framework could come with all kinds of applications - Microsoft Visual Studio is a generic programming environment. One application that has often been mentioned favorably here in the Lounge is Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing.

Woody's main objection against the .Net Framework is that it takes up a lot of space, I think. With today's hard disk that is seldom a serious issue. If you have enough free space on your hard disk, you might simply install it.

    Re: Net Framework (Vista HP)

    Hi Ron,

The net.exe you referenced is not associated with Net Framework. Here's an explanation as gleaned via WinPatrol:

    File Sharing Utility – NET.EXE

NET.EXE is a DOS command line utility that can be used to setup file sharing across a network. You'll probably find it in your windowssystem32 folder. You can use the NET VIEW command to display the names of the computers in any workgroup; use this command to view the computers in a workgroup: NET VIEW /WORKGROUP:wgname. Or this command to view the shares on any computer: NET VIEW compname. (Replace the wgname and compname variables with a workgroup name and a computer name respectively.)

I installed the newest Net Framework 3.5 the other day. It does not take up much room.

    Cheers, Bob

Installed it Hans ... all seems OK.
(My reading of Woody is quite different ... he does not mention 'size' but rather 'it could be the wrong patch' etc.)

    Hei Bob
I feel a bit of a twit ... for the 'Search' I typed Net Framework and of course the search picked up just the word Net! Apologies for wasting your time.
Also now installed OK ... as far as I know!
    Regards
    Ron

    Re: Net Framework (Vista HP)

Security update KB951847 contains updates to all versions for .Net Framework: v.1, v.2, and v.3 (they do not superseed each other). If you have any of them installed, install the update for security reasons.

You can also download the installer (KB article do not have the direct link to it) from Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1, or the full package (231 MB) from the link at the end of the page.
