Universal Serial Bus Controller missing (Pro SP3)

A friend called me and asked if I knew why his USB thumbdrive wasn't working in his XP SP3 virtual machine. The Host is Vista Home Prem. and all USB devices and peripherals work fine there. I had him go into 'Device Manager' in XP and discovered that the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" item was missing.

I thought this was an integral part of Windows and that it should have been loaded during installation?? Is it possible that there is a setting in the BIOS that needs to be enabled so the USB Controller will show up in XP even though it is there in Vista? What I need, obviously, is the correct destructions on how to include this "USB Controller" so his USB peripherals will work.

What VM software are you running? Have you checked for any restrictions in it about USB?

VMWare Workstation 6.5. I am running the same software and have no problem with USB sticks or any other USB peripheral on XP. We bascially have the same setup and that's why he contacted me for help. The only difference we have which I can see might be relevant is motherboard.

Motherboards and VM software can be a little 'funny' about what is supported. Did you check the VMware or motherboard sites? BTW, just for information sake what is the motherboard?

Both vmware 6.5 asus - Live Search and asus vmware 6.5 - Google Search have many links to check. I think you may get a better result checking/posting at VMware Communities: Community: VMware Workstation.
