Custom cell format (2007)

    Two questions:

    1) When I have text in the cell (as in N9), how can I have a portion of that text in a different color? I would like N9 to have (short) in red.

    2) I am having trouble with a custom cell format. I have a cell with text & number and when that number is negative, I want it to appear as (##). I do get that although I also receive a minus sign at the beginning of the text. The image below shows the results but here is the custom formatting:

N9 Custom format: "Excess (short) player spots @ tables: "###(###)
    N9 Formula: =N8-N7

(Edited by mbarron on 02-Feb-09 15:26. Forgot to use the [t] tag)
The correct format would be (supply your own text of course):
    "Pos Value" #.00;<!t>[red]<!/t>"Neg Value " (#.00);"No Value " 0

Unless E2007 differs from E2003, your entire cell will be red. I could not format only a portion of the cell using the custom formatting. No matter where I put the <!t>[red]<!/t>, Excel moved it to the front of the "Neg".

Mike is correct: you cannot color part of a cell by using a custom number format. If you want the word (short) in red, you'd have to place it in a separate cell (but that makes it difficult to get contiguous text.)
