windows xp - program data (sp3)

Is there any way to id registry entries for specific programs to be identified?

I need to move several major entities from crogram files to drogram files. One of my largest entries (Adobe reader 9) appears to need other data than just the crogram filesadobe for execution. Is there any way to track this down?

Is it possible to install adobe programs into a drogram files rather than crogram files?

Program installation usually offers the option of a custom installation where you can specify the folder into which the application is installed.

Although it might be possible to move an installed program to a different folder and fix all relevant registry entries, I think it would be a lot of work with a not negligeable chance of mistakes. It's easier and safer to uninstall the program, then reinstall it, choose the custom option and specify the new location.

If the installation software gives you an option of where to install then there is unlikely to be a problem unless the software is badly written. But I doubt that you will be able to simply move applications already installed by editing the registry.

Many programs write to the System or System32 folder, or both, when installed and there is really no way around that. But in many cases, you should be able to set the individual programs to store their data on a D drive or any other installed drive.

It would seem quite possible to search the registry for
    <font color=blue>crogram filesyourprogramname</font color=blue>
    (and also for
    <font color=blue>crogra~1yourpr~1</font color=blue>
of course!) and change these to start with
    <font color=blue>d:</font color=blue>
provided you are happy to run the risk that your program might also have a settings file which includes some path information, and render it unworkable in its new location unless spotted and changed.

Certainly if you can uninstall the program and reinstall it to the new location, as suggested above by Hans, that would be preferable!

I am going to have to move Documents and Settings to Focuments and Settings - on Windows Server 2003 - and I shall be relying on <!mskb=236621>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 236621<!/mskb>...

Thanks, I will use the uninstall - install approach and see what works. OBTW, I contacted Adobe about Adobe Reader 9, because I didn't seem to get an option about where to put it - their tech support responded that they were "Hardwired" to C:Program Files - evidently driver problems
