Looking for BCArchive

I'm hoping somebody out there might have a copy of the last freeware version (2.0.0.4) of BCArchive (Jetico - BCArchive software). Not sure if it's too big to post up here - the new shareware version is ~3MB. So RapidShare: Easy Filehosting or similar might be a good alternative.

thanks if you can help

Re: Looking for BCArchive

I just grabbed what I think is version 2.0.0.2. Looks like Jetico pulled all the copies of v2.0.0.4 that they posted. This file is 2.85MB.

Where did you get that version Doc? My hunt thus far indicates that every link on the net (for v.2+) has been redirected to the shareware version on the home site.

Here. It was the only link on a Google search that turned up anything but a link to shareware or the Jetico home page.

Excellent! Thanks Doc. I had found that link before, but got a "not found" when I tried to download. Got the same this time, but then (somehow) it downloaded correctly.

Glad to hear you got it. If you had not succeeded, I'd have gotten a copy to you.

Alan,

I don't know if you tried to install this yet, but I just did and it seems that the file I got is a TRIAL version and will expire at the end of the month. I did DL another copy from a different source and will try that one out now and post back. Sorry if I mislead you, but it seems I was mislead as well.

Re: Looking for BCArchive

I just installed the other copy and it is not a trial version, but a full functioning copy of v2.0. I think the other was v2.0.0.2, but I've already uninstalled and deleted it. If you want a copy of this file (2.84MB) let me know.

Re: Looking for BCArchive

Thanks Doc, but as you see, you did put me onto the freebie. That said, there is something "odd" about downloading from that site, as I'd mentioned. But I now have 2.0.0.2 and it is the ware version!

That's what I have. I guess I installed the wrong one first.

At least you got a version that was close to what you were looking for. I'm not sure what I'll use this for, but it is worth keeping.

I seldom require Turkish, so the version difference looks modest to me.

Re: Looking for BCArchive

The help file reads:

The software allows the user to:

o Create compressed and encrypted archive file protected by password.
o Create compressed and encrypted archive file encrypted by public key of another user.
o Add a number of passwords to existing archive file.
o Add a number of public keys to existing archive file so that a number of users can decrypt the archive.
o Generate new or use existing secret/public key pairs in PKCS-12/X.509 format.
o Compress and encrypt data to self-extracted executable program. The user can run the program on computer where BCArchive is not installed and get the data extracted.

It is this last feature I wanted particularly, for users requiring strong encryption but usability for the non-savvy.

Re: Looking for BCArchive

That was the only feature I could see that I would find useful.

I guess if you want a feature, you pay for it. Igpay Atinlay has usability for the non-savvy, but it is not renowned for its strong encryption.

Price aside, and for most purposes compression, since you have to have a lot of text to make compression an issue, what are the pros and cons of the assorted encryption tools such as virtual drives in any form, PGP, TrueCrypt, Steganos, BCArchive et al, Al?

Re: Looking for BCArchive

From the "trusted" encryption aspect of such software, I see the experts in the area usually citing open source (with the ability to easily compile your own copy), a well established product (not new to the game or fly-by-nighter) and the use of well established encryption algorithms (AES, DES, IDEA etc. as opposed to some homespun "snake oil"). Truecrypt often gets acolades in all these respects.

I guess the usability aspect is a pretty subjective judgement, while the compression aspects are rather "by the way" as you suggest. Most algorithm implementations will result in some sort of compression as a by-product of the way they process blocks of information, so I always treat that aspect as more of a handy extra selling point than a serious aspect of the data processing.

Just my . There are many more in-depth discussions on the specialized forums that abound.
