    Spaces with Monospace fonts (2003)

MS Word is not giving spaces the same width as other characters (even) in monospace fonts. In other words 1234567890 is the same length as iiiiiiiiii and WWWWWWWWWW but not the same as 10 spaces. I want to edit a monospace character ascii art (well, map) so this is a pain.

In case it is relevant, I have Asian text support installed.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Does it help if you use non-breaking spaces (Ctrl+Shift+Space) or n-spaces (use Insert | Symbol, Special Characters tab)?

Hi Paul, Welcome to Woody's lounge.

What is the name of the font that your ascii map is using?
    Regards,
    Rudi

I'm using Courier New, also tried Andale Mono, both of which worked just fine in other editing software (notepad, wordpad).
I need Word for the ability to copy rectangles ([ALT]+[mouse select]) otherwise I'd just use one of those two.

Neither en-space nor non-break space behave any differently.

This works correctly for me. I wonder if this could be something to do with the fonts availalble on your default printer?

Could you please have a look at the attached document and see if all the lines seem the same length to you - they do to me.

Have you tried temporarily disabling the support for Asian languages?

(The problem definitely doesn't occur in my version of Word 2003, which doesn't have support for Asian languages enabled)

Re: Spaces with Monospace fonts (2003)

Interestingly they _are_ the same length in that document.

However if I create a new blank Word document and copy your text into it the spaces are shorter than the other lines. It works the other way around as well - If I copy my map text into your document the spaces become the same length as the other characters. So I have an effective workaround, even if I still don't know why it went wrong in the first place.

You might check the Compatibility tab of Tools | Options... to see if they are set differently between your document and Stuart's.

    Good call, Hans.

The magic setting was "Balance SBCS characters and DBCS characters" (which needed to be unchecked).
That setting only exists if you have Asian Typography installed and is apparently on by default (DBCS = Double Byte Character Set). Exactly what they mean by 'balance', I don't know.

The only description of this setting appears to be "Not used in U.S. English Word", which doesn't tell us anything useful...

I doubt it's anything I'll ever need to worry about.

I think it may be one of those 'paranoia' settings to prevent glitches that cause mojibake (nonsense symbols) in odd situations.
