    Second OS on loading?

    Two requests on one night, sorry folks. I recently reinstalled Win2000 and something must have gone wrong. When I boot up I am offered either an "Unidentified OS" Or "Windows 2000". If I select the unidentified one it can't be found. How can I find and delete the files that must be causing this?

    Re: Second OS on loading?

    Hi
    In the root of your C: drive is a file called Boot.ini. Make a backup copy. It tells your loader where to find the OSs to put on its Menu. Remove the offending one and set Windows 2000 as default. The syntax of the lines looks a little peculiar, but I think you'll spot the one you want to get rid of.

    Re: Second OS on loading?

    I've backed up the boot ini file but if it won't boot I'm a bit lost with DOS. So just to be safe, can I afford to delete the last line completely, including the C: ?

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT="Microsof t Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
    C: = "Unidentified operating system on drive C."

    Yes. that'll be fine. If you need help with DOS, remember you can't do it unless you have double booting. However, I cannot see why removing that last line should have any deleterious effect at all. You could try putting a semi-colon at the start of the line (rather than deleting it) which ought to stop it operating.

    What 2 OS's are you trying to dual boot to?

    Or did this just happen when you tried to do a repair by reloading Windows 2000 and are not trying to run dual boot?

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    That's right, it was a Win 2000 repair. Not sure how the boot up process got messed up, unless it was the Win 2000 installer that left something.

    Re: Second OS on loading?

    Good point! I haven't got dual booting so I'd probably have to do a repair install. I'm away using my laptop for a presentation so I won't try it it this week - I'm not brave enough, but I'll try when I get back.

    Thanks for your help btw
