    'Stopped working' message after closing program (Outlook 2003)

    We have just installed Office on a laptop running Vista Home Premium. Everything works fine, but every time we close Outlook, a message is displayed a few seconds later: "Microsoft Office Outlook has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [Close program]". How can we stop the message?

    Can you start Outlook in safe mode? You do this by entering
    <code>
    outlook /safe
    </code>
    in the Run/Search box.

    Yes, and the "Outlook has stopped working" message then does not appear when the program is closed. Thank you for this suggestion. We have found that unticking the "AVG exchange option" in the add-in manager in Outlook also stops the message (we have AVG 8 anti-virus installed, and this also works fine.) If we leave the AVG add-in ticked but start Outlook in safe mode, will the add-in still work OK?

    If you start Outlook in safe mode, all add-ins are disabled. I'd leave the add-in disabled and start Outlook normally. As long as AVG's realtime protection is on, you'll still be secure.

    Does this indicate a bug in AVG's email scanner add-in, or some incompatibility between Vista and AVG, or might AVG need reinstalling or reconfiguring? If we leave the AVG add-in enabled and put up with the "stopped working message" when we close Outlook, will the AVG add-in still be working while Outlook is running?

    I'm not sure what the exact cause is, but there seem to be a lot of problems with AVG recently. Perhaps another AVG user will have a suggestion for you.
