Gmail & Outlook - IMAP vs. POP (2007)

I want to sync Outlook 2007 with Gmail primarily to 1) have a backup of my online e-mail and 2) to use xobni, which seems like a great addon.
I was all set to use POP, but then learned about the syncing features of IMAP. I've also read that IMAP can be very slow. Google recommends IMAP because POP can lose or download duplicate messages.
Any recommendations based on personal experience?
I have Gmail at work and use Outook at home and with DMailer at work. I don't get a lot of messages per day - maybe 50. Some attachments that can vary in size, but rarely in the multi-megabyte range. i like the idea of having messages show up in the Sent box regardless of whether they have been sent from Gmail at work or Outlook at home.
    Thanks.

I use IMAP in Outlook (2002) to connect to a Gmail account with about 17,000 messages. Synchronizing takes about 6 seconds on a fast internet connection.
Note: sent messages end up in the Sent Items folder of my main Outlook .pst.

    Thanks, Hans.
As usual, you are quick with a good response. I'm going to try it tonight.
