Did not close properly (Outlook 2007, SP 1)

Every time I open Outlook (using Vista Home Premium SP2) I get a message, "Outlook did not close properly..." and then something like we are checking and performance may be slightly impaired during this process. This happens no matter how I close outlook--with File>Close, or the little "X". Otherwise it all seems to work perfectly well. Why does this keep popping up, and what should I do?

There are quite a few reports of this (see this search ). In fact I experience this myself from time to time. I've not found a definite cause (or a satisfactory solution), so on the odd occasion when this notification does appear, I simply let the repair complete before closing Outlook.

Often add-ins and/or antiv-virus scanning cause problems in Outlook. You can try disabling e-mail scanning to see if that helps.

Thanks guys: I'll turn off AVG as a test as soon as I figure out how to . But for the long run, I'd drather have the warning, then the virus scan turned off--naturally .

I don't use AVG, but normally there is an option to enable (or disable) scanning for emails that are being received and scanning for emails that are being sent. I always disable email scanning for outbound emails. As for add-ins in Outlook - Tools>Trust Center> Add-ins. At the bottom of the Window, there is an option to Manage COM Add-ins. Click on Go... and you will be presented with a list of currently available add-ins. You can then selectively uncheck those that you don't use or which you might suspect may be causing the problem. Run Outlook for a while longer and experiment with this list.

Thanks: I'll play with all of these ideas and get back to you But so far you may have solved it: I unchecked "Share Point Discussion Boards" (which I had never heard of), and Outlook seems to be working faster, and so far without that message!!! We'll see in the next day or so

Have you run scanpst.exe on your PST file(s)?

    Hi John,
Not to put words in the OP's mouth, but I have done this several times and this message continues to pop up from time to time. I've disabled several add-ins (and continue to do so) in hopes that I can isolate the cause. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

I haven't but will search for it and try: Want to back it up first, just to be sure I don't corrupt it. Need to wait a week, as some work has piled up.
