Opening Word97 docs in Word2000 (WinNT SR6, Office 2000)

Our firm has merged recently with a larger firm - we were Word97 & they were on Word2000 so we 'upgraded' to Office 2000 (a contradiction in terms or an oxymoron?). When opening Word97 docs created using tables, text is printing outside of the bottom border. FYI: No - our printers have not changed - still Lexmark OPtra. While we could use autofit to cell I'm not at all sure that's a good idea - if the cell is edited, will the 'fit to cell' stick? This can be a real problem especially when you have a document of 200 pages totally formatted in tables.
Has anyone had the experience of opening documents created using Tables in Word97 in Word2000 with these issues? And, if we use 'autofit to cell' and apply that to the entire table will we run into problems later when doc is edited? Any information on switching to Word2000 and opening Word 97 docs especially table docs?
And to throw a curveball into the works, this 200+ page document will be edited several times over the next few weeks and we must redline i.e. table 1 version against table 4 version. Will the autofit to cell formating will hold up during redlining? Definiitely not looking forward to the resulting fallout. Appreciate any comments regarding tables 97 to tables 2000 or any comments on transition from Word97 to 2000.

P: I like to have my settings in 2000 to be friendly with 97. This can be done under Tools-Options, Save tab, "Disable features not supported by Word 97". Also, when you open the files, check Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. See if it's 2000.

I've had no problems opening Word 97 documents containing tables in Word 2000. We use HP LaserJet printers of various vintages.

Now, I'm not sure what you mean by the bottom border. If you mean the margin, you may have disabled horizontal breaks in rows, and now need to selectively re-enable them. In Word 2000, this setting is under Table, Table Properties..., Row tab, Allow row to break across pages. This can cause other problems, but it should at least fix the problem of tall rows ignoring page breaks.

If you mean the border of the table, I guess my reaction is, "that's impossible." Can you post a portion of an offending document (anonymizing the content suitably)?

Although I have never tried "Fit Text," it sounds like a bad idea unless you are targeting a magazine or other format where consistency of text size is less important than space.

P.S. We're looking into getting DeltaView. How is it working out for you?

Sounds like a good start - I will check that out first thing tomorrow morning.

Thanks! I will check that out first thing tomorrow morning. A 'reliable source' (which escapes me at the moment but I will check out source and postback unless someone out there knows) but this [mvp??] specifically said NOT to do that since we'd miss out on some features of Word2000). However, what you suggest makes good sense and I'll try it out on this monster document.

Thanks for your answer!
Re DeltaView - it's working out quite well. I have a couple of minor issues outstanding with Workshare but they are very minor and I believe are user-issues or printer issues rather than a DV issue. It's *&^% costly but since CompareRite did not support its product and will disappear in Feb 2002 it's the only game in town. (I totally discount Track Changes or the built-in Compare feature shipped with Word-UGH!)
The really great thing about DV is that they actually respond to inquiries. If I have a problem and the UK office is closed I call the San Francisco office (vis-a-vis time differences) so whether it's 2pm or 2am you can get a response.
I have often sent e-mail to their web net support and get a response back pdq.
Re the 'fit to' - it's Word2000's fit contents to cell or some such language. It worries me to do this and would only use it as a last resort - just to get the document 'out the door' so to speak. See Dreamboat's response - sounds like a good possibility. And if her suggestion doesn't work I will post the offending doc.

Thanks - tried the 'disable features not supported by..." but no joy. I also tried enabling/disabling other features under Tools, Options, Compatibility (don't have Word2000 at home so can't list exact wording but i.e. 'layout tables using raw width) with no success.
Re e-mail response: Yes, the tables were created using Word97 and yes, they printed correctly - no problem with text printing outside of the bottom cell border and yes, I have posted at other sites with no luck other than suggestions to use 'fit text to cell' which I'm a bit leery about.
[/b]I welcome any input. TIA [/b]

I think we will need to look at the doc. I use 2000 SR-0, but we also have SR-1, SR-2, and XP in house now, just down the hallway.
