Mail Merge (W2000/Win98SE)

I wish to mail merge different items from each sheet of a 4 sheet Excel file into a Word document. At step 2 of the Mail Merge Helper I click on "Open Data Source" and navigate to the Excel file I wish to use. When I click on Open I am presented with a dialog box titled "Microsoft Excel" in which I am to "enter the range of worksheet cells you want to use". If I specify a cell range in the format A1:G1 OR if I specify a range in the format Sheet1!A1:G1, I get an error message "Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft Excel to complete the current task". If however I accept the default range of Entire Worksheet, that's OK but I can then only access the fields on the first Excel worksheet.
Does this mean I am limited to accessing data from the first worksheet in an excel file?
Also, what entries am I supposed to make in the dialog box that asks me to enter the cell range?
Cheers
John

My only experience of this is with W97 and XL97 and then only in a limited fashion so I may be wrong but...

You only seem to be able to get at fields on the first page of an Excel 97 sheet when it's used as a W97 mail merge data source.

Hi John,

Named ranges work best.

You can use information on other worksheets. In the Open Data Source dialog box, check the

Hi BAM and thanks for your help.
I did as you suggested but when I select SYSTEM TABLE, all the worksheets in the Excel file were displayed but I could only select ONE of them, multiple selections were not allowed. Which means I am still with my original problem of merging data from multiple worksheets.
I trolled through the WORD HELP files looking for help with named ranges but didn't find any. If this is the way to go, can you point me in some a HELP direction. Ta.
Oh, and feeling adventurous I attempted to create a MSQUERY but I crashed and burned pretty badly!!!!
Ciao

Hi John,

Sorry, I misread your post. The method I provided is how to use a different worksheet other than the first when you use Excel as a data source.

Peter Jamison, MS Word MVP, has provided the necessary steps for what you want to do in<A target="_blank" HREF=http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&safe=off&threadm=eCTdJy8CBHA.2116@tkm sftngp07&rnum=9&prev=/groups?q=multiple+worksheets+Merge+Word&hl=en&lr=& safe=off&site=groups> this post on the public MS newsgroups that you might want to take a look at.
