    Quicktime movie size

Sorry in advance if this is the wrong forum, I did not know whether to post in graphics or here.

    Afternoon all

I do not use digital movies much but my son has asked me to use my Kodak camera that has a video function to record him making century plus breaks at snooker to send out as a promotional to try and get sponsorship.

My camera makes these into quicktime movie formats and a 12 minute recording of him getting 133 last night is an incredable 574mb. I know that there are various free tools out there to change the movie type but in your experience which one would offer the smallest size and best picture quality.

    Thanks

    Steve

I have no experience comparing the various video programs, Steve, so I can't comment on which would be the best for your specific need. I do think however that I'll move your post to the SOFTWARE forum since there might be a Lounger there who doesn't look in Scuttlebutt.

    Hi Jerry

Thanks for the link, it looks good, I will experiment with more it tonight. The actual question though was not about conversion software, that is why I posted it in Scuttlebutt, it was actually about what was the best format to reduce size and keep a reasonable picture.

Experimenting with another piece of software though Any Video Converter I found that the .MOV could be reduced to 21mb as a .swf and 18mb as an .flv (I don't know if it is a Vista Home problem but I have downloaded both of the free softwares from Adobe and both formats will not play on my machine)

Most amazingly though I converted to .MP4 format and it reduced to 4.8mb, picture was still good but lost sound on my PC but when my son uploaded it to the web the sound was OK.

Thanks Ken for the heads up on Bink and Smacker I had forgotten all about it because of my infrequent forays into the movie world.

    Cheers

Editted to add: AVC is also free

    Re: Quicktime movie size

You can play a .swf file by dragging and dropping it into a browser window. A .flv file requires a .swf player to play it, which is what you find on YouTube and many other sites.

You probably don't have the right codecs installed to play those files. Get the latest K Lite Codec pack here. HTH
