Word / Excel cell ref (2003)

Can I put an embedded spreadsheet into a Word document, and use formulas in it which refer to cell contents in another workbook? Ideally I want to use countif() in the word document's spreadsheet to count the number of times a particular value appears in a range, like I would if I countif() in the workbook. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean a workbook stored outside the Word document? If so:
    - Right-click the embedded Excel object.
    - Select Worksheet object | Open from the popup menu.
    - This will open the object in a separate instance of Excel; you can open other workbooks in this instance and refer to them the usual way.
    - When you're done, select File | Close and return to Microsoft Office Word.
