Clicking on form crashes Word (Word 2007 / 2003)

I have a strange situation. I've developed a Word form that is being distributed worldwide. The client is officially using Word 2003, so that's what the form is designed against. The form is protected so that users can only type in fields.

Some users have reported this problem: they open the form, fill in a few fields, close and reopen the document. If the first thing they do is to click on the text field they filled in, Word crashes. If however, the user clicks on an empty field first, then the form works okay.

I cannot reproduce this in my Word 2003 installation, however, I do have the same problem in Word 2007. I'm checking with the client to find out which build of 2003 they are using (I have SP3).

So in 2007, when I click on any field for the first time, the form "flashes" or "jumps" a bit. It seems that it is updating the fields or something. If I click on the field with text in it, it dies in the middle of this "flash". What is Word doing at this time? Using Visual Studio de######, it says it's an unhandled win32 error in winword.exe with the number 4972.

I've tried putting in an AutoOpen macro that does ActiveDocument.Fields.Update, and adds text to an empty form field, to see if I can force it to "flash" while on an field that doesn't have text. That didn't work. Does anyone else have suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Corrupt document?
Word traditionally screws up the innards of documents/templates.
An overwhelming desire to fix the ultimately unfixable problem might be replaced by a fixed-price cost of rebuilding the document from scratch.

I would resist the impulse to copy-and-paste to a new Word document, but would copy-and-paste by a neutral vehicle such as NotePad, to drop any skullduggery that Word tries to copy across.

Sounds painfully slow, but it is often blindingly faster.

Aargh. I was afraid you'd say that. It would be incredibly painful to recreate the document. It has 9 pages of "fancy" table formatting with fields interspersed, and it's been translated into eight languages. (I warned the client that they were pushing beyond the scope of a Word form, but they never listen....)

I think I've isolated it to a problem in the header. The header has REF fields that pull in the name and date from a previous page. You can scroll to the page in question, and when you click on the first field, Word "refreshes' the page and tries to update those header fields. That's when it crashes. I deleted all text in the header and the problem stops in Word 2003.

I guess I need to try and rebuild the header and hope that it isn't a truly unfixable problem.

Well, I don't see why anyone else should have a good day (grin!) .....

    >warned the client ... but they never listen....
    You're not billing them enough.
Ramp up your per diem by 50% and they'll listen then.
Ramp up your per diem by 100% and they'll hang on to your every word.

I hope that you can fix it with a quick bit of surgery, but if after surgery it continues to fail, just print out the next line

Could be a bug worth reporting to Microsoft. I assume they still accept bug reports for Office 2003. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi Bob,

The problem may be caused by the update to the fields in the header pushing something on one or more pages to the threshhold for repagination. Try putting the problematic header into a table cell of suitable fixed dimensions, so that the document won't repaginate regardless of the header contents.
