Word labels (Word 97/2000)

Hello! My daughter is just about to start teaching and needs to set up a document from which will be printed book labels for each pupil using a mail merge data source containing all their names. So far so good, but how can we place a name in the centre of a label? It defaults to the top. Is there a different label template than the standard postage label which defaults to the top or is there a way of setting the vertical alignment of a paragraph to "center"? Cheers in anticipation.

Why not just do the merge. Then hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, and hit ctrl-e (the shortcut for centering).

She can select the merge codes in the window and hit ctrl-e too, I believe, before merging.

When you have the main document set up, with the merge fields in place, but before starting the merge...

Labels are really just a page-sized table, with text and merge fields in the cells. Table cells (not the paragraphs as such) can have vertically centered alignment. The problem is probably that the Mail Merge Wizard tends to put in extra empty paragraphs at the end of each label, which pushes the visible text upward.

Click the Show/Hide button on the toolbar. If you see two paragraph marks (

The Tables and Borders toolbar can be helpful in formatting labels. See Tables (addbalance.com/usersguide/tables.htm) for more on setting up and formatting tables.

Also, keep in mind that tables (and thus labels) can be different in Word 2000 than they are in Word 97. If your daughter is working with Word 2000 to set something up for Word 97 it is important that she check the feature that limits her document to Word 97 features. Otherwise she may end up with labels she can't use. You can see a demonstration of this in my Nested Tables Demo.

    Hope this helps.
