How can I remove the Internet Explorer icon from my Vista desktop? (I use the classic start menu).

    Start regedit.
    Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerHideDesktopIconsClassicStartMenu
    Look for an entry on the right hand side named {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}
Double-click this entry and set its value to 1.
    Click OK.
You may have to restart Windows to see the effect.

Or you could "Right click" the desktop, select Personalize and then on the left side, select "Change desktop icons".

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

It doesn't appear that Internet Explorer is included in Desktop icons in Vista. In Win XP I think there was the option to enable/disable the IE icon.

Can't you simply delete it ??? It should be nothing more than a shortcut.

Re: remove IE icon from desktop (Vista Bus SP1)

You can have two different types of shortcut to Internet Explorer on your desktop:
    - A "standard" shortcut with a little shortcut arrow in its lower left corner. If you right-click this shortcut and select Properties, you get the shortcut properties dialog.
    - A "magic" shortcut that has IE-specific items in its right-click menu such as Internet Options. This can't be created the usual way.

In pre-SP3 versions of Windows XP, one could toggle the "magic" IE shortcut on and off in the properties of the desktop, but Microsoft has removed the check box, probably in compliance with demand to make IE less integrated with Windows. Now you need to edit the registry setting.

The screenshot below shows the two types of shortcut, with the "magic" one on the left. (Screenshot taken in Windows XP)

Yes, I am aware of this. But, each is still a shortcut and can be deleted, correct ???

If one were to want to keep the "special" shortcut, I suppose that it could be move out of the way somewhere until it is wanted or needed again.

Re: remove IE icon from desktop (Vista Bus SP1)

Thanks Hans. The laptop in question has a SSHD which is quite small. Before I did your registry edit, I was going to create an image of the laptop's C drive. Because of the small drive size, I tried to image it from my main computer, but the network connection between the laptop and the rest of the network has totally disappeared. That's why I hadn't tried your reg edit. However Doc Watson suggested just deleting it. Now I had tried that several times and it wouldn't delete, but I just tried again for the nth time and it worked.
    Thanks anyway.
    Regards,
    Peter
