    Add/Remove Programs File (XP SP3)

    Hello everyone,

When a user downloads SP3, should they be able to delete the protracted update list from the Add/Remove programs file? Are not these updates included in the SP3 upgrade?

Thanks, there's mucho info in the lounge. I read it almost everyday.

What is "protracted update list "?

If it is the listing of Windows Updates, they can be turned OFF (Not Shown), by removing the Green check mark at the top of the pane near "Show Updates".

All of the older updates that have been rolled into the SP should have been removed from the list upon the install of the SP. The ones listed are new ones that have been released after the RELEASE of the SP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Welcome to the Lounge!

During Service Pack installation, Windows Installer removes all entries for updates which are included in Service Pack. This means, there is no reason for deleting them manually.
But since SP-3 was released, there are already between 40 and 50 (depending of particular Windows configuration) new updates, which are not included in SP-3.

However, the purpose for putting updates on the Installed Programs list is the possibility to uninstall them. If your Windows installation is working good after the update and you think there will be no reason to uninstall it, you can delete the corresponding items (keys in the Registry and folders in Windows folder). Just remember, it is a good practice to create a backup (or, better, the image) of your Windows installation before any major change.

You're right in that there have already been a number of updates since SP3 so I wouldn't bother with hacking around in the registry. Sounds to me like Dave's idea is easy to implement and gets the long list of updates out of the way of a reader.
