Select icons in Start Menu (Vista Bus SP1)

Is there any way to have the icons I want, and ONLY the icons I want, in Vista Start Menu ?
    Regards,
    Peter

If you mean the "new" Vista Start Menu, the answer is yes, but if you mean the "classic" Start Menu in Windows Vista, I think the answer is no. The "new" Start Menu is much more customizable than the "classic" version, just like in Windows XP.

Yes I meant the non-Classic Start Menu.
But I now have a problem. I changed to the non-Classic Start Menu, but it's blank. Yet all my icons are in the 2 places Vista keeps them - The Program Data area and the Users area. If I change back to the Classic SM the icons are there. Back to the non-Classic and the icons are all gone.

I'm afraid I'll have to leave that for someone who actually has Vista.

Re: Select icons in Start Menu (Vista Bus SP1)

    Nothing that I can recall.
I was so frustrated that I could find no way to have the icons I want and only the icons I want in the SM that I went to the Classic SM. When I went back to the non classic SM the first time all was well, except I had to click the 'More Programs' button to see my icons. However, going back to the non classic SM now just shows a blank, not even the 'More Programs' button. I tried the 'Use Default Settings' button to no avail.

Peter you are saying that lefts side of the Start Menu is empty, but all of the shortcuts in the right column are there?

If this is true, then it appears that the Pinned Area and the Recent areas have been cleared.
If you turned OFF the Recent (the 2 check marks on the Start Menu properties pane) then these were removed.

It would help if you could post a screen shot of this menu.

Re: Select icons in Start Menu (Vista Bus SP1)

Beginner. Had XP.Now Vista...no control..Have the same problems as Peter. No icons under "their" menu, go back to old view. My icons I put on, wake up, and Icons they may have used all over Desktop. I have called everyday (almost) and vented my frustration to the constant changing to "sleep ", (where they do their relay system"..changing the computer to the way it is.) When I called I was told Alta Vista is totally controlled by them and the default to "sleep" is default and CANNOT be changed as well as " Indexed Locations", and many other options. You cant do it because I was told, it was for my protection. Just press help and support THEY choose the default., plan and simple. It's horrible. They have defauled User Account Control, which I cannot turn off. Greyed out to default, "they choose the programs I installor reject them.. Again I called...No choice, look under help and support, shockingly allot of your answers are they control your computer. I was told , all this " relay system". was for your protection. I have AVG , and I am defaulted to Windows Defender, and it is greyed out. They said Alta Vista is for protecting us from changes by unauthorized users and hackers...and it is in my best interest. I have 89 programs on start up, on small laptop that uses 100 percent usage. Copying, relaying. I have resorted to unplugging my cable at the modem each night to try and "get them off".....but it is exhausting...Is Windows XP still for sale ? They swore all of the "default" options you are trying to change is to protect you from unauthorized changes from hackers. The only hacker I have is them, and if one more program, relay system, sleep settings, etc...is DEFAULT..Check Help and Support I was shocked to see, they have the default....for your protection..? I also tried to use Mozilla and Thunderbird for the first time, and the UAC user account control by them, would not allow it and all of its features. So as they knew ,I deleted Mozilla and went back to Internet...they said the spread of malicious spyware is 100,000 per day and they are trying to stop it with "control"...and change things back with the relay system..I will call and bark, until I suddendly, had a "fatal error"..on Saturday, and everything, I forced to get changed, I had to FORMAT computer back to all their defaults.......Checkmate....Is XP still for sale on what site ? Or the next computer will be a Mac ? Until you use it, Joe is right, in 3 months I am so frustrated, especially when it is the way it works..and says so in help and support ? Just read it...I wish I had kept my old computer with XP.......but I am sure we will all be dragged Alta Vista way ...

If this "Alta Vista " is the search engine, at http://www.altavista.com/web/default, what does it have to do with the Start Menu and Windows Vista?

    Who have you called everyday?

Yes, sleep and hibernation can be turned off!

    Re: Vista Home Premium

HPG-60 Laptop, Vista Premium 1, 3.00 GB, Ram, Disk (not sure ) AVG-Anti-virs&Spyware, In Warranty - Called Hewlitt Packard on their toll free line, technical dept. For some of the same icon situation below, and other defaulted options. Then I just go to Help and Support?, and it is there in Black and White. Some things can be modified but not deleted, Some things can be modified. As I was looking why my emails were in Indexed Locations within 3 clicks of the start button, without a password, I called Hewlitt Packard and asked why? They said it was the default and you could modify the location and not delete them, I am trying to do that now. I opened Help and Support and the Location of the email was outside of the Windows Live and passwords, Hewlitt Packard said this as for my faster searching feature .. I am new, and I was wondereing if others were facing some the same situations, Actually just viewing my EMAIL by pressing start, programs, documents Indexed Locations, I was reading my email. I called and complained and now the link is gone, but the email still there for anyone to read.
I need to read some posts below, as I found Reliability in the Search Menu, that matched someone elses problem wth internet explorer shuting down problems...remember just beginner and realizing I am having some of the same issues as those below.....there are some good suggestions, I was agreeing with Joe Perez when he said he should have gone back to XP a year ago...then I found ebay back on my computer after being deleted for the 4th time. Hewlitt Packard just answered it is a relay system so hackers dont remove data , It actually states "recycling", when I tried to delete.....just watching your answers to learn from your obvious expertise. I need to buy the book, any link for that ? Thanks for your patience, I was just glad to see not alone with some issues....and remembering this is the website for DUMMIES....well I thought that's me..I dont know why I have 79 process on start up , discussion when I know more....and order the book .....and read your posts..

You sound like you are totally confused here and are mentioning things that just don't make any sense. ( at least to me ) I can't get any sensible connection or information out of your two posts..... Sorry!

If this is still in warranty, I would get it back to HP. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

Re: Select icons in Start Menu (Vista Bus SP1)

Wow, this seems to have generated some heated replies.
Unfortunately I became so frustrated with my new laptop suddenly being unable to connect to my network, despite everything Microshaft could do (nothing) and despite everything that Lenovo could do, that I took the ultimate step of reverting to Lenovo's re-setup as new option. Unfortunately, that failed catastrophically. I resorted to the re-install discs they included and they failed to. So now I am stuck with a laptop that won't work, and will have to wait for the Lenovo on site repair guy. Some time ago someone (perhaps here on Woody's) advised to ALWAYS pay extra for extended warranty. I'm sure glad I followed that advice.
As a result I will have to wait for a few days before trying the proposed fixes above.
    Thanks anyway guys.
    Regards,
    Peter

They weren't directed at you for sure.

    Good luck with your reconstruction. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Peter.
Left click on the windows logo at bottom left of your screen.
    left click on all programs.
Right click on the program you wish to pin to start menu and select pin to start menu.
To remove right click on program in start menu and select unpin from start menu.
I have both biz & ult.Works in both.
