Keyboard stopped working-Can't log in (WinXp Pro SP3)

This is not a hardware issue for reasons which will be clear later. I shut the system down and upon restart the keyboard and touchpad no longer work so I cannot enter a password and log into Windows. Strangely F8 worked so I tried safe mode with the same result. I tried a linux CD and found that the keyboard worked just fine. I made a text document and all keys worked properly. All I have is a system restore disk made myself years ago when I bought the laptop which will only allow me to restore to the factory image.

I have a not quite legal WinXP disk and thought it might repair the legally installed version. All it did was install a second version of windows XP on the c: drive in a different folder and this version works properly. I get a choice of which version to boot into when I turn on the machine. The keyboard works on the new install and does not work in the old install.

What the heck happened and how can I fix it. Under the newly installed WinXP I can see the D: partition where all my data is stored and all my programs were installed so I can save my stuff to an external drive And start over as a last resort.

This is a 5 year old Sony VAIO PCG GRT270P laptop 1gig ram, Windows XP updated to SP3 and all other current MS updates. The system recognizes a wireless USB mouse but not a USB keyboard.

    All suggestions will be appreciated.

Care to enlighten us on that?
It looks like you just dual boot installed two versions, when you really didn't need to go that route.

Its a bootleg copy of winXP. I hoped to use it to repair the original installation since Sony did not provide a copy in windows with the laptop but it didn't give me that option and just made a second installation in a new folder on the c: drive.

If I didn't need to do that how di I fix the original installation?

    Thanks.

You probably need to do a Repair Installation. There are instructions with screenshots here if that is more helpful.

Thanks for your help. Your links to the repair option would likely be successful if Sony had provided a windows install disk for their installation but I didn't have that and all they offer is a recovery option. The additional windows install I made allowed me to copy everything important to an external drive so no data was lost. I then just recovered to day 1 and all is well. Several hours of windows updates and software re-installation should recover my system to a usable state.

If anyone can tell me why/how this happened I would love to hear from you.

    Thanks again to all.

I was working under the assumption that you had an XP install CD. Bootleg or not, it should give you the option to open the Recovery Console and do a Repair Installation. Perhaps I was not as clear about this option as I might have been.

Glad you got things sorted out. As to why it happened, there could be any number of explainations. They could range from a Windows update trashing the drivers for your particular keyboard to a virus. Without doing any troubleshooting while the problem existed it is literally impossible to know.

If you had come here before you attempted to fix things and given some details about what you had been doing or if you had recently updated something we might have been able to save you some trouble. The first thing to try when something off the wall like this happens for no apparent reason would be to rollback any recent updates or patches (to Windows or any other software). Often, that is the cause of these sorts of problems. The fact that your keyboard worked on the new installation of Windows, but not the old would lead me to suspect that it was a Windows update that caused this. But, as I said, there is no way to know now.

Thanks DocWatson. All I had was a bootleg CD and for whatever reason it did not give me the recovery console option. All is well now and will hopefully stay that way.
