    Ownership doesn't work

I have a folder on an external drive - I:TEMP -- that I used for transferring files from one machine to another. It seems that some of the files -- a lot of them -- if they come from system folder like WINDOWS -- decide that they can't be deleted.

Not if I take ownership; not if I use something like unlocker; nor if I try to do it as Administrator.

How the heck, without reformatting the drive, do I delete these files?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Chuck,
Hello again, seems that you and i are always having the same problems with "deleting" things .( my favorite ! ) How about this solution that Joe Perez gave me awhile back.(that has worked when nothing else would.) right click on said file and click "properties" then, security then advanced, then change "owner" or "Effective Permissions" then you will be able to do your "thing" Regards Fred

    Fred:

I tried that first. Then tried to do it "As Administrator", then logged out and came back in as Admin. Then I could delete 'a' file, but that would only take...oh...about 4-5 hours doing it one at a time!

    Chuck

    Chuck,
If you have a "Backup" how about "Taking ownership of the whole Folder"? then delete what you want then return ownership back to "Trusted installer" ( not really sure who that is though) I have done this in the past with mixed results heck it's worth a try if for nothing else trying something thats not "in the box thinking" Heck one time i tried to take ownership of my whole "OS" ( didn't work out too well but im not giving up yet! ) Regards Fred

    Re: Ownership doesn't work

    Fred:

I had thought of taking "total" ownership of the folder; I did, and it still won't work...says I need permission from [myself] CWBillow.

Just tried it in "Safe Mode" as well...no luck.

    Such a pain...

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
By "taking ownership" i mean "right click / properties /Security/ advanced/ etc/etc." not "Take ownership" via winbubble context menu tweek. Are we on the same page?or did i misunderstand you? regards Fred

Fred, yes we're on the exact same page.

I still haven't figured out how / why it tells me that CWBillow owns it and he's the only one that can do anything...who is that guy -- oh yeah, that's ME!!

    Chuck,
The only thing that i can think of at this point is that after changing "permissions" you might have to "re-boot" not sure about that! Hope some of the more knowledgeable can add to this, as this is my favorite "PC" area! (deleting stuff) As of now im out of ideas ... Good luck . Regards Fred

    Re: Ownership doesn't work

    I hope so too Fred.

I've run into this a couple times before, but because of my config at the time, I was able to ignore it and then format at a later point. But that it this point would be a real pain. 'Sides, I'd like to understand this a bit better...

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
What files in particular do you have, that migrated from Windows into the Temp folder? Did you move them there?

    Bob:

Yes, they got there as a step in a transfer process when I was repairing my daughter's laptop. I had copied all her files to by backup drive, then fixed her setup, so now I don't need them any longer.

Sounds like this guy "why it tells me that CWBillow owns it and he's the only one that can do anything" had a account on the daughters machine and copied them to this External drive. Now is is no longer around and the " CWBillow" on the current machine is NOT the same "CWBillow" that was on the daughters machine.

You just may need to connect this "Daughters machine" and login as the CWBillow guy and try deleting them from there.

If you couldn't take ownership, you should have sold the rights to the contract. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> It's done in pro sports all the time.
