Internet explorer 8 (XP Service pack 3)

My computer is set to be advised of all updates, but only install after I agree. When I was advised that Internet Explorer 8 was available, I clicked on download and install. Unfortunately Internet Explorer 8 did not successfully download and I have had some problems. The three that concern me most are-: I cannot use Internet Explorer or run, update or remove Windows Defender or Ad-Aware and I must use Mozilla for my web browsing. Could you please let me know how to re install IE6 and get my computer back. Restore to a previous condition did not correct the fault. I have the Windows XP compact disk that came with my computer. Can I safely remove IE8 and re-install IE6 or IE7?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

If you uninstall Internet Explorer 8, version 6 will probably be reinstated automatically. This happens too if you use Internet Explorer 7 and uninstall it.

You might also try using System Restore to go back to the restore point created when you installed IE8. You may have to turn off your antivirus program temporarily when performing a system restore.

Having unsuccessfully downloaded IE8 beta I find I cannot use Internet Explorer. I cannot delete it and when I try to re-install IE7, I find IE7 will not install because there is a later version (IE8) installed. How can I un-install or delete IE8. I had stupidly removed all restore points just prior to downloading IE8 so I cannot restore to a previous state.

Unless someone else has a better idea, it might be best to reinstall Windows.

This is probably not the answer you want to hear. You should only install beta software, such as IE8, on a PC that you don't mind having to wipe clean and do a complete reinstall, and that is what you are probably going to have to do now.

Often a software installation will create a restore point automatically. Have you checked to see if a Restore Point exists?

I'm not sure how IE8 is listed on an XP system. So, do you have "Show Updates" at the top of the Add/Remove Programs panel checked?

    From here....

    For Windows XP users
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Add or Remove Programs.
Select the Show updates check box if it is not already.
Scroll down the list and select Windows Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1, and then click Remove.
