    Another CPU question

I have seen some listings for new AMD CPU's and was confused by the difference in wattage.

They went from 65W to 140W.

What does the wattage rating mean?

How much power is needed to run it?

    Re: Another CPU question

It's the maximum power it consumes during intensive use. The power supply in your PC is rated for a total wattage, i.e. the sum of the power consumption of all components in your PC. So if you have a PC with CPU rated at 65W and a power supply that is just adequate, it wouldn't be advisable to replace the CPU with one rated at 140W - you'd probably blow up the power supply. And since power is converted to heat, a 140W processor also needs better cooling (e.g. a fan).
