Hei. This is my first post on the new Woody so here's hoping!
Under other post/s (and I don't know how to specify them here ... yet) I have investigated with excellent guidence some desktop (explorer/internet explorer) problems that I had or still may have ... though all is well just now.
Via the HP Health Check feature in my HP 6500 series laptop I am now advised to download and install a newer version of their 'Active Support Library'- Version 3.1.9.1. It will not install. Failure stated is '1628 Fails to Install'. I had a look on the web at what this actually means and it seems to point to registry problems for which there appear to be many different suppliers of 'Fix your Registry' 'no worries mate'.
I have never got into the 'registry' since I understand this is for 'experts only' but maybe this is the time to have a go ... perhaps faults in registry also have given me the other two desktop issues mentioned?
What is the 'Woody/Microsoft' recommended (easy to use) free download that I could apply to try to solve this and maybe other registry problems ... I think something was suggested to me in one of my earlier postings but 'how to find it' I have yet to solve! Must take time out to read 'Help'.

And thanks to all those who have given us these new Woody tools to learn.
    Ron

Since this is HP software you are trying to install, have you checked the HP support site?

Could be a permissions problem for a registry key. Is there a log file generated?

    Hei Joe,
Thanks for your reply ... somehow I don't think that I am replying direct to you and I can't work out how to do it from the Help menu. Need your expert guidence also on this if possible!
I can't find anything specific on the HP site. The pc Event software suggests that the update was installed but clearly its not because of the install failure report. I think that I have attached the Event Report for you to see.
I could install eg CCleaner which seems to be recommended to check the Registry. But then the problem for me will most likely be to understand what to do from the report, not having any experience of working in the Registry. Maybe when I have done a Registry check I could 'screen print' the result and seek more advice before pressing a 'Fix' button ... what do you think?
This software update is not critical but it would be nice to solve it.
    Ron

I hate to "commandeer" a Vista thread but you've asked two question in your posts that should be answered. In the upper right corner of each post is a Post #. If you click it, a window will open as shown here. Press Ctrl-C to copy the link to your clipboard. Click OK to close the window. Then, if you want, you may paste that link into any post, like this: Post 761418.

    [attachment=82418:2009_02_26_080620.png]

It seems you used the reply button at the bottom of the thread to reply to Joe. However, if you use the reply button in the lower right corner of Joe's post, it will "quote" Joe's post in your reply so it will be clear to all readers that you are responding to Joe. You may, if you like, shorten that by highlighting and deleting all the text between the quote tags and it will leave only what's called a "snapback" icon that allows one to click to see Joe's full post. See how I arrived at the quote you will see in THIS post in this graphic:

Hei Bigaldoc ... thanks for your advise.
I am trying your second suggestion to see if I can reply to you. Have I got this correct now? Last time I tried to reply to Joe but did not delete any of his text etc from my reply ... I got a message to say something about the 'links not corresponding and that I should correct them before trying to send?
So I guess the correct way is to just leave the initial header from (in this case) you in my reply?
(To make my reply to Joe I guess that I sent a 'reply to me!')
    Ron

Edited by StuartR to add [/quote] to the end of the quote so it displays properly

It's not really very important who you reply to. Most Loungers will be using Standard view, in which it isn't possible to see to which post you reply anyway, unless you quote the post.

    Hei Hans,
How do you know that I have replied to your post without keeping a look at threads? It seems that you get an email (I did from you) but I can't quite work out what I need to do to make sure that you get an email when I reply?

Hey ... I guess that all of this is for a general 'How to use Woody' posting so maybe I had better also get back to what I started to ask above, part of which is:
I could install eg CCleaner which seems to be recommended to check the Registry. But then the problem for me will most likely be to understand what to do from the report, not having any experience of working in the Registry. Maybe when I have done a Registry check I could 'screen print' the result and seek more advice before pressing a 'Fix' button ... what do you think?

Stuart ... what does this mean and how did you do it?

Even in flat mode, I don't agree with Hans. It's nice to know which post you're responding to. That's why I like this "in the middle" method of cutting out the text but leaving the snapback. You still didn't do it correctly in this reply. Stuart fixed your previous one, so here's a screenshot of what I did to show you that, in order to make it show up right, you HAVE to leave the tag ENDING for the quote in place. If there's more than one quote, they must have two opening and two closing tags. Check this out to see if it clarifies.

About CCleaner: it is a relatively conservative registry cleaner, so I think it's generally safe to delete everything it suggests. CCleaner will offer to make a backup of the registry before deleting entries; you should let it do so - if something goes wrong (which is very unlikely), you'll be able to restore the original situation.

About posting: I don't have any e-mail subscriptions. I just look through the forums to see where new replies are posted. So whether you reply directly to me or to someone else, I will read it.

Way To Go, Ron! Two in a row - good job!

But just to close the loop on this, here's another screenshot of what I meant by double quotes. I believe there might be a "bug" in the new Lounge software that leaves out the second closing quote tag, so you can see in this shot that I'm adding it manually (blue highlight). Have fun and Happy Lounging!

Edited by StuartR to add 'quote' to the end of the quote so it displays properly[/quote]

Tags in this board have a very specific format. You must always have an opening tag which looks like this [tag] and a closing tag which looks like this [/tag]. So for example a quote starts with [quote] and ends with [/quote] (it actually has extra information with the username, date/time and post number, but that is irrelevant here).

In your post you had [quote] at the beginning of the quote, but you didn't have [/quote] at the end, so it did not display as a quote. I just edited the post and added the the text [/quote] at the end of the quote.

Yes Yes Yes ... Thanks all for allowing me to take up so much of your valuable time Slowly its beginning to make sense and I am getting to (sort of) like the new Woody's.

Oh, and I have download CCleaner but now is not the time for being brave ... need a few hours (day's??) to have a bit of a read before I push the Registry clean buttons. What a successful day for an 'old feller'
As they say 'up ere' Tusen takk ... that's if the snow is not above head level!

Since the Windows Installer reports that it installed correctly, it could be just some post installation cleanup problem. What version does the program says it is if you look at Help | About ?
