Caveat: The machine is a clunker; it comes with a 40GB C: drive, not under my control.

Twenty minutes after booting, I open a straightforward Word document (6 pages, 1 table, 9 columns, about 60 rows), and notice via Task Manager (screenshot attached) that Word2003 is burning up 14% of the CPU cycles.

I say to myself, "Self? What on earth is Word doing burning up 14% of CPU cycles, well over a minute after the document has been opened and presented to me for my inspection?".

This is not a burning issue; I'll be out of here within two weeks, I hope, but I'm struggling to think of what Word (or any other desktop app) might be doing with all that CPU.

It depends on the machine configuration. What are the specs?

Also, is Word configured to do automatic documents saves? What frequency?
