I would prefer to download XP updates and save and install manually, so that in case of a system rebuild, I do not have to stay on line for ever adding patches. Is there a preferred order on installing patches? Using Windows Update, the actual order they get installed seems to differ to the order displayed on the list of patches presented.

Your best bet for a system rebuild is to have a slipstreamed XP instllation CD/DVD. Then just install the patches after the last service pack. With XP SP-3 out, the list of additional patches is not too horrendous at the moment.

In some instances there is a particular order for installing patches. Windows Update is able to determine the correct sequence. Windows Update is also aware of fixes that supercede others and does not download/install uneeded patches.

Thanks - I suspected it was not so simple. Maybe I will stay with Windows Update, there cannot be too many more patches for XP SP3??????????/

XP SP-3 is going to be supported until 2014. See Microsoft Support Lifecycle for details.
