I have 6 fields in the row area of a pivot table. When I add say 4 more fields, I get an error saying that there are too many rows. The row area expands to put more fields but it won't take any more than 6.

There is no limit to the number of row fields, but to the number of rows generated by all row fields combined: this can't be larger than 32,768.

See Description of the limits of PivotTable reports in Excel.
