This seems to be an oddity.
    I have a 3-column table in Word 2003.
Column 1 holds the name of a group, column 2 holds the name of a macro. Macros belong to (functional groups).

Four macros are no longer in use, so I put them in the group "Obsolete" which sorts between "New charts" and "Plot appearance".

I decide to preface each "Obsolete" with a space character, thinking that this will sort them to the top of the list; it doesn't do so.

Nor does using a hard space (Ctrl-Shift-space).
I see nothing in the Word2003 help that indicates this.

Try using an underscore or exclamation point. They will both sort to before the purely alphabetical entries.
