I'm using Office 2007, but I rarely use Excel, so maybe this is a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find the answer. When Excel opens a file, how does it decide where to start. I am working with a large spreadsheet sent by my editor for reference. It has 35 sheets. Whenever I open it, it opens to sheet 19, with the entry point about halfway down the page. Sheet 19 is one that I rarely use. How does Excel decide to start there? Is there a way to force it to open to sheet 1. Or, lacking that, open where I left off when I closed it? It seems odd. Word documents always open to the top of page 1. Powerpoints always open to the first slide.

I have no experience with XL2007 but in all other versions the starting sheet and cell is the location it was saved at.

If only this particular file has this behavior, I would presume there is some "on open" macro in the workbook having it start at this location.

Is it only this workbook, does the workbook have code in it?

In addition to Steve's reply, try the following:
    - Open the workbook.
    - Activate the first sheet.
    - Activate cell A1.
    - Save the workbook (Ctrl+S).
    - Close the workbook and reopen it - it should open to the first sheet now.

I guess I don't understand how the new forum format works, because I posted a reply and thank you on March 8, but it never appeared. Is there something I need to do besides click "Add Reply"?

Anyway, I'm trying again. I feel pretty stupid about it, but it never occurred to me is that the reason the spreadsheet always opened at a sheet that I never used is that I was sent the spreadsheet for reference, and I never actually edited anything in it. Once I realized this, I went to sheet one, added a character, deleted the same character, then saved and closed. When I reopened it, it opened to sheet 1.

For my next challenge, I'm going to try to learn to tie my shoes.

Thanks for your help and patience.
